There are provided an apparatus and a method for blocking abnormal conduction in the cardiac muscle using a photodynamic therapy or for treating arrhythmia. There is provided a catheter ablation apparatus for the treatment of arrhythmia using a photodynamic therapy, comprising a catheter leading a photoradiation unit to an abnormal electrical conduction site or a hyperexcitability occurring site in the cardiac muscle of a test subject in which a photosensitizer is present by administering the photosensitizer beforehand and which causes arrhythmia, means for generating a light ray with which the abnormal electrical conduction site or the hyperexcitability occurring site is irradiated, and means for transmitting the light ray to the abnormal electrical conduction site or the hyperexcitability occurring site, wherein the photosensitizer used is a water-soluble chlorine-based photosensitizer and the light ray used is a light ray having an excitation wavelength equal to that of the photosensitizer. 1. A method of treating atrial fibrillation using a photodynamic therapy by means of catheter ablation apparatus for the treatment of atrial fibrillation using a photodynamic therapy , comprising a catheter for leading a photoradiation unit to an abnormal electrical conduction site between the left atrium and the pulmonary vein in a test subject , means for generating a light ray with which the abnormal electrical conduction site is irradiated , and means for transmitting the light ray to the abnormal electrical conduction site , which comprises:administering a photosensitizer in a test subject at the dose per weight of 0.5 to 5 mg/kg at 3 h or less before photoradiation which results in the plasma concentration of the photosensitizer in the test subject becomes 10 to 30 μg/ml at the photoradiation;inserting a catheter having a photoradiation unit and a structure whose end is freely bent for leading a photoradiation unit into an abnormal electrical conduction site, between the ...

A skin treatment device () for locally treating skin with light is provided that comprises a tip (), a light emission element (), a safety mechanism comprising an optical element () and an optical element positioning structure (). The optical element receives a converging light beam from the light emission element. The optical element is configured to operate as a diverging lens. The optical element positioning structure positions the optical element in a safety position, or in a treatment position when the tip is in contact with the skin to be treated, and allows movement of the optical element between both positions. In the safety position, the optical element is arranged at a position on the optical axis to generate an eye-safe light beam. In the treatment position, the optical element is arranged at another position on the optical axis to generate a treatment light beam. 2.
