Securing straps are attached to two legs of a standard bed and extend under the bed and up the side onto the top surface of the bed where they are attached to the user's legs near the ankles by cuffs. The user can then extend their upper body off the edge of the bed so that it can move through a wide range of angles above and below the plane of the top surface of the bed. The securing straps and cuffs hold the user's lower body in place during these exercises, allowing the user to exercise all of their core muscles through the zone of peak gravitational resistance.

When sitting on the seat and resting the back on the backrest, the user can selectively bend the upper body forwards and backwards to contract the proximal muscles, or keep the upper body immovable and move the lower body up and down to contract distal muscles. By means of biasing of the seat and the damping effect provided by the damping mechanism during operation, the muscle strength of the abdominal muscles is trained. Changing leverage is exerted on the exercise arms as they rotate, thus counteracting the increasing difficulty of the stroke due to decreasing involvement of the tricep muscles. Attached to each exercise arm a hand-grip where gripped area rises from the horizontal to allow lateral movement of wrist through the stroke. The radius of the circular motion is adjusted by the telescoping hand-grip. A patient support apparatus comprising:a controller having a processor and a memory, the memory having instructions stored therein related to an exercise regimen for a patient,a graphical user interface, wherein the controller is configured to display an alert on the graphical user interface when the patient is scheduled to exercise, anduser inputs displayed on the graphical user interface to enable a caregiver to record exercises completed by the patient, wherein the processor is configured to compare the exercises completed by the patient to the exercise regimen, and wherein the graphical user interface displays a chart of the exercises completed relative to the exercise regimen.2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to update the exercise regimen based on a comparison of the exercises completed to the exercise regimen.3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller sends an alert to a remote computer when the patient is scheduled to exercise.4. An exercise device including two foot platforms riding on elongated rails for longitudinal motion relative thereto. The platforms are directly connected to each other by one or more elastic elements. The platforms are also connected by linear and/or rotary dampers to provide motion damping. In addition, weights and/or flywheels may be used to smooth the oscillations. When the two platforms are side-by-side, the elastic elements run in a substantially crosswise direction. A seated user may place the user's feet on the platforms and move his/her feet and lower legs back and forth in a scissoring motion to move the platforms in opposing directions along the rails. In so doing, the user overcomes the resistance of the elastic elements and dampers connecting the platforms. This provides the user with exercise and its accompanying benefits.
