A fluid transfer assembly for a disposable bioreactor comprising:a fluid transfer housing having a housing body defining an input port, at least one outlet port and an elongate housing passageway extending in fluid communication therebetween;said housing body further defining an open shaft passageway extending therethrough; anda rolling element bearing, such as a roller bearing or a ball bearing, affixed within said shaft passageway, said rolling element bearing comprising concentric inner and outer bearing races and a plurality of rolling elements, such as rollers or balls, positioned between the inner and outer bearing races, the outer bearing race being affixed to the housing body and the inner bearing race including an inner surface defining a shaft aperture such that the inner race is affixable to an impeller shaft so that the shaft may rotate independently of said housing body.2. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of outlet ports in fluid communication with said housing passageway.3. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein said housing body includes opposed first and second planar major surfaces and a perimetrical side wall extending between said first and second major surfaces.4. The invention relates to a stirred tank reactor for gas-liquid mass transfer in a slurry. The reactor includes a reactor tank ( 1 ) having a first volume (V 1 ), a drive shaft ( 2 ) that extends vertically in the reactor tank, a motor ( 3 ) for rotating the drive shaft ( 2 ), a main impeller ( 4 ) which is a downward pumping axial flow impeller attached to the drive shaft ( 2 ) to create a main flow pattern in the reactor tank, and a gas inlet ( 5 ) arranged to supply gas into the reactor tank ( 1 ) to be dispersed to the liquid. The reactor includes a mechanical gas sparging apparatus ( 6 ) comprising a dispersion chamber ( 7 ) having a second volume (V 2 ) which is substantially smaller than the first volume (V 1 ) of the reactor tank ( 1 ), the dispersion chamber being arranged coaxial with the drive shaft ( 2 ), and the gas inlet ( 5 ) being arranged to feed gas into the dispersion chamber ( 7 ), and mixing means ( 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 ) arranged within the dispersion chamber ( 7 ) for mixing the gas into liquid by dispersing the gas to fine bubbles before the bubbles enter the main flow pattern. A method and apparatus for injecting a gas into a liquid in which a rotating helical impeller within a draft tube submerged in the liquid creates a liquid flow within the draft tube. Gas bubbles are injected into the draft tube either above or below or alongside the helical impeller or in all three locations. The liquid is drawn into the draft tube with a superficial velocity greater than a substantially uniform terminal ascent velocity of the gas bubbles to allow entrainment of undissolved gas bubbles in the bulk liquid into the liquid being drawn into the draft tube. The gas bubbles are injected with a uniform diameter of between about 10.0 microns and about 1.0 millimeters. The small bubble size enhances the dissolution of the gas into the liquid and also allow the entrainment of the gas into the liquid being drawn into the draft tube.

A pneumatic bioreactor includes a vessel containing a fluid to be mixed and at least one mixing device driven by gas pressure. A first embodiment includes a floating impeller that rises and falls in the fluid as gas bubbles carry it upward to the surface where the gas is then vented, permitting the impeller to sink in the fluid. The floating impeller may be tethered to a second impeller with a flexible member and pulley. The mixing speed is controlled with electromagnets in the vessel acting upon magnetic material in the impeller or its guides. In another embodiment, floating pistons mix the fluid, pushing it through a mixing plate with one or more apertures. In a third embodiment, the mixing device is a rotating drum with bubble-catching blades and rotating mixing plates with apertures. The top of the vessel for these mixers may include a closed top and sterile filters.
