A hydrocarbon-containing gas is mixed with an oxygen-containing gas in a gas mixer in the presence of a water mist. The water mist surrounds and contacts entrained particles in either the oxygen-containing gas stream or the hydrocarbon-containing gas stream. The water acts to suppress and prevent ignition of the hydrocarbon gas in the mixer by serving as a sink for heat created by energetic collisions between such particles and structures within the gas mixer. The water mist also acts to quench ignition caused by such collisions. The water mist can be introduced into the gas mixer in a number of different configurations, including via nozzles injecting a mist into a hydrocarbon gas manifold or an oxygen gas manifold, nozzles placed within the gas mixer adjacent to ends of the oxygen supply pipes, and nozzles placed coaxially within the oxygen supply pipes in the gas mixer.

A compressor station having at least one primary compressor and a booster compressor is controlled to conserve energy and air, and to respond quickly to sudden changes in demand for air, by employing a volume bottle to buffer changes in air pressure and by recycling already compressed air from the intake to the output of the booster compressor. The system may be used in air drilling and to provide compressed air for generating low density drilling fluid on site by injecting microbubbles into a base drilling fluid. Two different methods of generating microbubbles are illustrated. The primary and booster compressors are kept in a state of readiness during drill pipe connection time, providing for a rapid resumption of pressure and air flow after connection is completed. The system can utilize gases other than air.

The invention also relates to a device in which the reaction takes place, which has at least one vertical area made in form of a closed loop where the reaction takes place. Both elbows of the loop are connected to a reservoir lying above for predistillation, from which the reaction product in form of gas or liquid or gas and liquid comes out. The inlet for chlorine and dissolved ethylene lies on that elbow of the loop on which the liquid rises. The inlet for dissolved chlorine lies downstream after the inlet for ethylene which lies upstream. At least one inlet for liquid 1,2-dichloroethane lies after each inlet for chlorine and liquid 1,2-dichloroethane is fed with such high kinetic energy that the 1,2-dichloroethane mixes with dissolved chlorine and ethylene. The invention relates to a method for producing high-purity 1,2-dichloroethane from dissolved chlorine and dissolved ethylene which are brought into contact with each other using a circulating liquid reaction medium which essentially consists of 1,2-dichloroethane and a catalyst and passes through at least one reaction loop. The two limbs of the loop are connected to a gas-phase stripping container which is arranged at the top and from which the reaction product is outwardly transferred either in a gaseous or liquid form or both in a gaseous form and in a liquid form. The addition points for the addition of chlorine and dissolved ethylene are arranged in the limb of the loop in which the liquid rises. The addition point for dissolved chlorine is always arranged downstream of the ethylene addition point. At least one addition point for liquid 1,2-dichloroethane follows each chlorine addition point, and the addition of the liquid 1,2-dichloroethane is carried out under kinetic energy which is high enough to enable a vigorous mixture of 1,2-dichloroethane, dissolved chlorine and ethylene to be carried out. Preferably, the liquid 1,2-dichloroethane is added by means of at least one jet mixer.
