Lactide synthesis is an energy intensive process used to prepare polylactic acid. The present invention is based on a one-step reaction using a newly developed SnO_2-SiO_2 nanocomposite catalyst. This catalyst enables a rapid reaction rate (20 ms) and is used to produce lactide at a 94% yield (the highest yield so far). Compared to conventional processes, a process of the present invention has a plurality of advantages as well as a rapid reaction rate and a high yield. In addition, because of a rapid reaction rate, a processing amount thereof is significantly large. Moreover, the process of the present invention is performed under atmospheric pressure conditions, and thus energy efficiency is further secured compared to the conventional processes operated in high vacuum conditions (20 mmHg).
