A compressor station having at least one primary compressor and a booster compressor is controlled to conserve energy and air, and to respond quickly to sudden changes in demand for air, by employing a volume bottle to buffer changes in air pressure and by recycling already compressed air from the intake to the output of the booster compressor. The system may be used in air drilling and to provide compressed air for generating low density drilling fluid on site by injecting microbubbles into a base drilling fluid. Two different methods of generating microbubbles are illustrated. The primary and booster compressors are kept in a state of readiness during drill pipe connection time, providing for a rapid resumption of pressure and air flow after connection is completed. The system can utilize gases other than air.

The method for treating materials in liquids involves passing them with the liquid through a processing gap formed by a flow passage whose walls are closely spaced and move relative to one another transversely to the direction of flow, thereby producing "supra-kolmogoroff" mixing eddies in the gap, and at the same time applying ultrasonic longitudinal pressure oscillations that reverberate between the two closely spaced surfaces into the gap transversely to the direction of flow from transducers mounted on one wall, thereby producing "sub-Kolmogoroff" mixing eddies therein. The method is capable of rapidly producing relatively thick slurries of sub-micrometer particles that otherwise can take several days in conventional high shear mixers and ball or sand mills, or of rapidly dissolving difficultly soluble gases and powders into liquids. One type of apparatus consists of two circular coaxial plates, one stationary while the other is rotated, the opposed faces forming the processing gap being mirror finished; the rotational axis can be vertical or horizontal. Another type consists of an inner cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis inside a stationary hollow outer cylinder with the facing walls closely spaced at their lowermost parts to form the processing gap. The ultrasonic transducers are mounted on the stationary member. The liquid/material mixture may be recirculated through a single mill or may be passed through a series of mills. The mixture may be pretreated in a high capacity reverbatory ultrasonic mixer before being fed to the mill or series of mills.

A continuous flow liquid mixing apparatus in which a rotor is arranged coaxially within a housing with the mutually facing peripheral surfaces thereof defining a clearance space in the form of an annular passage with a gradually and continuously decreasing radial cross-section. This annular passage serves as a mixing zone having an inlet opening at the larger section end and an outlet opening at the smaller section end thereof. The mutually facing peripheral walls of the rotor and housing are continuous and smooth and free of any interruptions or perforations and preferably the radial dimension of the clearance space is not more than 10 mm and optimally not more than 5 mm. Drive means are provided for imparting relative rotation to the rotor or housing to apply shearing forces to liquid passing through the mixing zone. In the region upstream of the mixing zone, the mutually facing peripheral wall sections of the rotor and housing diverge sharply to provide a feeding space which is free of interruptions in the form of baffles, grooves or the like and the liquid or liquids to be mixed are introduced into this feeding space.

[Class 23.] Liquids are emulsified by passage between two relatively rotating surfaces so curved that the width of the annular gap between them decreases in the direction of flow; the crosssectional area of the gap remains substantially constant. One surface A<2> is formed on the stator A which consists of two parts bolted together and carrying the bearings E, E<1>; the stator is also provided with conduits A<3> for heating medium such as steam or hot water. The two parts B of the rotor are keyed to the shaft C and are provided with vanes B<3>. The co-operating surfaces A<2>, B<2> of the stator and rotor respectively are parabolic, and the annular passage B<1> between the parts B of the rotor communicates with the discharge pipe D arranged tangentially in the casing. The liquids to be emulsified are supplied through the pipes F, thrown outwards by the vanes B<3> and then passed through the gap between the surfaces A<2>, B<2> to the passage B<1> and discharge pipe D. Four keyways are provided so that the rotor parts may be readily adjusted on the thread C<1> and the keys are held in position by a locking ring.

The process as defined in my invention for recovering vegetable oleaginous substances from oil-containing natural substances comprises a series of continuous combined pressing and extraction steps to increase and simultaneously to guarantee a high quality product for different kinds of natural substance starting materials. This is accomplished by subjecting the natural substances, conditioned and comminuted if necessary, after mixing with a solvent phase containing some oil to an intensive processing, mixing and extraction in the shear field of at least one rotor-stator unit and subsequently feeding the resulting liquid phase, through a filter if necessary, to a distillation column. The solid phase is extracted in successive stages until a residual oil content of 1% is reached and the solvent is fed back to a solid phase in a counterflow. The process as defined in my invention is universally applicable to all fat and oil-containing natural substances using suitable fluid extraction means. An apparatus for performing this process is also provided. A variety of rotor-stator assemblies are provided for the rotor-stator unit as defined in the nature of the natural substances being processed.

An extensional flow mixer especially for viscous liquids has a housing (10) with an end inlet (12a, 14a) connectable to a pressurized source of the liquids, and an outlet (119) at an opposite end of the housing (10). A mandrel (30) located in the cavity has protrusions (20', 32') with sloping side surfaces, the outer edges of which cooperate with the internal surface (114a) of the cavity to divide the cavity into a series of chambers separated by slits, such that liquid passes successivel y through all the chambers and slits in moving from the inlet (12a, 14a) to the outlet (119). The slits have cross-sectional areas which decrease in the liquid flow direction. The mandrel (30) sides have helical grooves (134) forming passageways with the housing wall (114a) which allow liquid to be distributed evenly around the edges of the mandrel (30) to the inlet end or upstream chamber. The mandrel (30) may rotate to provide additional shear mixing.

SUBSTANCE: the invention is pertaining to the field of molding of polymers, in particular, to the new efficient device and the method of regulation of viscosity of different polymeric materials using a shifting thinning and-or untwisting. The device for decreasing viscosity of polymeric melt by means of the melted material shift vibratory pulling through with formation, at least, of a shifting deformation, contains: a loading gear, an inlet and outlet of the technological cavity, the technological cavity formed by the first and the second surfaces separated from each other with formation between them of a technological cavitary spacing, and an engine for movement at least of one of the surfaces in respect to another. One of the surfaces is made with a capability of motion relative to another with formation of a shifting deformation of the melt of the polymer, and at least on one of surfaces there is a ribbed construction having a contour for movement of the melted material on it and is made with a capability of a local speeding-up of stretching and braking of the melted material simultaneously with a periodical change of the shifting speed of the melted material deformation. The invention provides for a method of production of a polymeric material by means of its shifting vibration, at which the process of untwisting of the melt is realized by a means of shifting vibrations at a fatigue deformation of stretching just up to the given level of untwisted state of the untwisted condition of macromolecules of the polymer. Then adjust the temperature of the polymer crystallization due to dynamic action of the speed of cooling of the beginning of the crystallization, with removal of barriers for such a transformation and conduct the polymer after-treatment till its hardening. Liquid is extracted from a slurry or suspension by passing the mixture along an annular chamber defined by a barrel member 8 enclosing a worm member 6, the barrel and worm having respective helical grooves 12, 10 whose threads are of opposite hand and which vary in depth in opposite senses along the chamber, portions of the chamber walls being porous for extraction of liquid therethrough by pressure under which the mixture is delivered to the device. As shown, the barrel and worm each have additional helical grooves 14, 16 which are covered by porous metal ceramics or plastics elements (18) (Fig 2 not shown) and which communicate by holes (24), 20 with liquid outlet (22) (Fig. 3, not shown) and hollow interior 17 of worm 6. As shown, the worm is rotated by motor 40 within stationary barrel 8, but the barrel alone could rotate, or both worm and barrel could be fixed or rotate. Heating and/or cooling jackets may be provided. The barrel and worm narrow at the solids discharge end, and grooves 14, 16 stop short of that end, which is closeable by a plate 33 moved by rams 36. Initially, plate 33 is held against end 38 of barrel 8 as shown, while mixture is delivered to inlet 52. Once pressure has built up, plate 33 is withdrawn rightwards and solids are discharged from the right hand end 38 of the barrel. Liquid extracted is either discharged at outlet 53, together with any fluid from seal 50, or by resetting a valve (Fig. 2, not shown) the liquid may pass through conduit 30 and a corresponding central hole through shaft 34 to which suction is applied. Solids removed from one device may be mived with fresh liquid and delivered to another similar device. A screw 48 is provided for axial adjustment of worm 6 within the barrel, whereby the radial spacing between the crown portions of worm and barrel is varied.

Both die members have annular, concentric protrusions with symmetrically opposed inner edges, the protrusions dividing the space between the die members into a series of annular chambers separated by annular slits. The mandrel sides have spiral grooves forming spiral passageways with the housing wall, and which are connected by radial passageways to the inlet. The passageways allow liquid flowing from the inlet to be distributed evenly around the edges of the die members, passing between these to the outlet.

New methods of operating surface reactors, and such reactors, particularly spinning disk reactors, require that a first reactant is fed to a reactor surface (20) and forms a thin radially outward moving film (60) thereon in a reaction passage (42) formed between the reaction surface (20) and a parallel, closely spaced (less than 1 mm) retaining surface (40). The passage thickness is precisely controllable and the surfaces (20, 40) move relative to one another so that strong shear is applied to the material between them. A second reactant is fed to the surface (20) as a second thin film (65) that as it enters the first film (60), preferably perpendicularly, it is immediately merged therewith along a correspondingly very narrow interaction line (66) by the shear at a rate such as to break up molecular clusters in the films, so that their molecules can aggressively and completely interact by forced interdiffusion. In spinning disk (18) apparatus the first film (60) is fed along the spin axis (14), while subsequent films (65, etc.) are fed at respective distances from the axis (14) such that there is adequate shear for the molecular cluster disruption. Preferably each film (65, etc.)after the first (60) is fed into the reaction passage (42) through a respective thin annular nozzle producing a thin circular film (65) that simultaneously merges with the first film (60) along its entire length.

With the preliminary kneading device, the powder is dispersed in the liquid after conforming to the liquid, which suppress damage to the powder. The conditions of main kneading can be changed only by adjusting the gap, which facilitates the operation of changing the conditions of the main kneading.
