The invention provides an alternating current electrospray technology that can generate micron sized droplets in oil at very high throughput for emulsion or digital PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). This technology outperforms the throughput of the current gold standard in droplet generation using flow-focusing technology by at least a factor of 100. The design is simple and can generate a billion to a trillion monodispersed droplets in about one hour. This is much faster than flow-focusing which is limited to a few million droplets per hour. The droplet size and generation rate can also be easily adjusted by changing the voltage of the AC electric field. The range of produced droplet sizes is about 1-100 microns, wherein the droplets are monodispersed in size.

In the microfabricated device according to the invention, detection of the presence of molecules (i.e., polynucleotides, proteins, or antigen/antibody complexes) are correlated to a hybridization signal from an optically-detectable (e.g. fluorescent) reporter associated with the bound molecules. These hybridization signals can be detected by any suitable means, for example optical, and can be stored for example in a computer as a representation of the presence of a particular gene. Die Vorrichtung umfaßt eine erste Fluidleitung (L1) zum Führen eines zeitweise strömenden ersten Fluids sowie eine zweite Fluidleitung (L2) zum Führen eines zeitweise strömenden zweiten Fluids, wobei die erste und die zweite Fluidleitung an einer Verbindungsstelle mit einer die beiden, insb. miteinander vermischten, Fluide weiterführenden dritten Fluidleitung (L3) verbunden sind. Darüberhinaus umfaßt die Vorrichtung ein in den Verlauf der ersten Fluidleitung eingesetztes erstes Durchfluß-Stellgerät (SG1) zum Einstellen eines Volumen- oder eines Massendurchflusses des ersten Fluids sowie ein in den Verlauf der zweiten Fluidleitung eingesetztes zweites Durchfluß-Stellgerät (SG2) zum Einstellen eines Volumen- oder eines Massendurchflusses des zweiten Fluids sowie Mittel zum Erzeugen eines einen momentanen Einstellwert (S1) für das erste Durchfluß-Stellgerät repräsentierenden ersten Stellsignals (S1) eines einen momentanen Einstellwert (S2) für das zweite Durchfluß-Stellgerät repräsentierenden zweites Stellsignals (S2). Zum Erzeugen des Fluidgemisches wird abwechselnd das erste Fluid oder das zweiten Fluid in dritte Fluidleitung einströmengelassen. Die Erfindung ist insb. zum Mischen von Fluiden unterschiedlicher Viskosität geeignet.

This is a method and apparatus for treatment of liquid media making use of at least one float positioned at the top of the liquid and at least one gas diffuser placed under the float and connected to this float by at least one brace, the diffuser is connected to a gas source by at least one flexible conduit. The gas emitted from the diffuser produces a mixture with liquid having density lower than the liquid and the float partially sinks in the liquid thus increasing the submergence of the diffuser and lowering the gas flow through the diffuser. At increased submergence, the gas flow is reduced, the mixture density increases, and the float rises. A repeatable motion up and down of the float-diffuser is established producing pulsations in the liquid. The method and apparatus can be used in a multitude of chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, environmental and other industries for carrying out mass transfer, chemical and biological transformations, phase separations, thickening of suspensions, mixing, suspending of particles, washing, coagulation-flocculation, membrane filtration, filtration across particulate media, filtration across floating media, mass transfer across membrane, and other processes.

An improved injector system including an injector operatively connected to a source of pressurized gas and mounted to an accumulator located in close proximity to the bottom of a tank containing a fluid or other materials. The injector comprises a chamber housing and a valve disposed in the chamber housing. The chamber housing is matable to an accumulator that defines an orifice, and receives pressurized gas from an external source. The valve engages the accumulator and selectively administers or obstructs the release of the gas into the tank as directed by an actuator contained within the chamber housing. In ambient environments that tend to foul and clog the chamber orifice or accumulator orifice, a removable orifice plate is used wherein the valve engages the orifice plate.
