The exothermic reaction is assisted by an electrical heater, raising the temperature in one zone of the reactor to up to 1250 deg C. The high temperature zone of the reactor contains a solid body (8) which is hot enough to ensure both a quick reaction and favorable thermodynamic conditions for the reactions to be achieved in a relatively small reformer. The solid body is made of granular and/or porous refractory material, such as mineral or synthetic grains, metal wires or rods, or a metal or ceramic honeycomb. The material acts as a contact surface for the pyrolysis and/or partial oxidation of the hydrocarbon. The reactor contains an internal heat exchanger to increase the temperature in the reaction zone and of the body. The intrinsic inefficiency of the exchanger is corrected by adding heat which can be rapidly controlled by a local supply of electrical energy using the Joule effect as the electrical current passes across a resistance placed in the zone and the body. The heat exchanger also cools the flow leaving the body in the tube (2) and the surface of the exchanger is augmented by a structure (12) which may be in the form of conducting fins. The energy exchange is also increased by the turbulence around entering and leaving fluids. Thermal insulation (13) is placed around the reactor to conserve heat so the reactor can operate in quasi adiabatic conditions. The reactor is tubular, approximately 0.25 m diameter and 3 m high, and able to resist pressures of up to 4MPa.

The oxidation catalyst is capable of facilitating oxidation of an oxidizable gas component of a hydrogenrich gas, even at temperatures substantially equal to a normal room temperature. A dual utilization liquid and gaseous fuel CPOX reformer that includes reaction zones for the CPOX reforming of liquid and gaseous reformable fuels. A reforming method is also provided. The method comprises reforming a first gaseous reformable reaction mixture comprising oxygen-containing gas and vaporized liquid fuel and before or after this step, reforming second gaseous reformable reaction mixture comprising oxygen-containing gas and gaseous fuel to produce a hydrogen-rich reformate.

(57)【要約】 【課題】 起動した際に、選択酸化触媒を有するCO選 択酸化部の内部温度を、できる限り短い時間で、所定の 温度以上に上昇させることが可能な一酸化炭素低減装置 及びその駆動方法を提供する。 【解決手段】 CO選択酸化部120の内部には選択酸 化触媒121の他に所定量の酸化触媒122が充填され ている。この酸化触媒122は、水素リッチガス中の酸 化可能なガス成分の酸化反応を室温と同等の温度におい ても促進することが可能な触媒であり、白金(Pt)触 媒を用いる。CO選択酸化部120の内部温度が室温と 同等の温度であっても、この白金触媒の働きにより、水 素リッチガス中の酸化可能なガス成分を、酸化ガス中の 酸素によって酸化させることができる。従って、その酸 化反応によって発熱するため、水素リッチガスの温度を 上昇させて、CO選択酸化部120の内部温度を上昇さ せることができる。
