The piston (3) may be loaded by means of an actuating rod (31) having a handle (32), and may be latched in a loaded position by a latching means (33). A liquid drug (e.g. in aqueous solution) is contained in a collapsible bag (10). Metered quantities of the drug are successively presented in the pressure chamber (4), and then subjected to a sudden and great increase in pressure, to eject the liquid drug through an atomising head (22), to reduce it to a fine atomised spray of small mean particle size - for example, less than 30 micrometres. Non-return valves (13 and 23) control the flow of liquid through the device. The sudden pressure pulse is caused by releasing the spring loaded piston (3), upon depressing an actuating button (35) connected to the latching means (33).

A dry powder inhalator for delivering a precise dose of a medicament contains a mesh disc impregnated with a series of spaced, medicament doses about the disc periphery. The inhalator is armed by manually retracting a finger pull extending downwardly from the bottom of the inhalator housing or rotating the bottom of the housing. The user inserts a mouthpiece on the housing into the mouth and inhales. This causes a chamber in the housing under a diaphragm to evacuate, thereby pulling the diaphragm down onto a knock out lever. The pivoting of the lever enables release of a piston into a cylinder which first compresses, and then dispenses a reduced volume of air at high pressure in a burst up through the medicament disc. When the burst of air hits the impregnated disc, the dose is forced out of the mesh's interstices, producing a cloud of the drug in its powdered form, which is inhaled by the user.

It is compact, economical to produce, easy to assemble and comprises components with a low rate of wear. The useful life of a device needs to be limited, where hygienic, medical or technical grounds exist. A device which cannot be influenced by the user is thus required, which reliably, effectively and terminally prevents the further use of the device, as soon as the given number of operations is achieved. A locking device with spring operation and a counter is provided on said device and housed in a two-piece housing, the both parts of which are mounted such as to rotate relative to each other and the above can be blocked by a pre-tensioned leaf spring. The leaf spring is originally housed in a recess in the wall of the one housing piece. As soon as the permitted number of operations is achieved, a pin extends the leaf spring from the rest position thereof. The leaf spring then extends into a recess in the wall of the other housing piece such that the both housing pieces can no longer be rotated relative to each other. The pin can be located within the display of the counter. The blocking device can only be overcome with a force great enough to destroy the device. The device is suitable for blocking a high-pressure nebuliser or a needleless injector, by means of which a fluid is atomised to give an aerosol or a fluid is injected into a biological tissue.

A locking-stressing-mechanism with spring-actuated output drive and a counter with which an apparatus of this kind is fitted, accommodated in a two part housing the two parts of which are mounted to be rotatable relative to each other, can be blocked by means of a pre-stressed leaf spring. The leaf spring is initially accommodated in a recess in the wall of one housing part. As soon as the permitted number of actuations has been reached a push rod pushes the leaf spring out of its resting position. The leaf spring then jumps into a recess in the wall of the other housing part and the two housing parts can no longer be rotated relative to each other. The push rod may be mounted on the pointer of the counter. This blocking device can only be overcome by the application of a force which is sufficient to destroy the device. The device is suitable for blocking a high pressure atomiser or a needleless injector with which a fluid is atomised to form an aerosol or a fluid is injected into a biological tissue.

Thus, even with repeated use of the atomizer microbial contamination of the fluid over the useful life of the atomizer can be prevented.

The invention relates to a hand-held medical device having a counter, preferably a dose dispenser such as an atomizer for dispensing dosed amounts of a drug preparation. The mechanical counter comprises a plurality of individual components, of which at least one is designed in such a way that said component can be installed in a quasi-subsequent manner as the last part after the assembly of the atomizer. Said component, with which a characteristic counter function such as preferably the display of the count is associated, is irreversibly connected to the housing of the atomizer. By installing a counter component subsequently, the design of the counter, for example the counting range, can be postponed until the time at which the drug formulation is fixed, in other words the dosage specifications with which the device is to be used. A preferred example is a liquid atomizer having a spindle/rider counter, wherein a rider to be installed differently from case to case is attached to a housing part from outside as an individual component. When said housing part is rotated relative to another housing part, a counter spindle supported there is driven. The rider is located on said counter spindle as the component that indicates the count. The rider on said counter spindle forms not only the indicator of the counter; the position of the rider on the spindle determines the counting range and the triggering of a blocking mechanism when the end of the counting range is reached.
