The paint spraying system has a work space 1 which is accessible through a door and from which an exhaust air fan (2) sucks exhaust air (3) via a paint mist filter (4) and a fine filter (5), partly blows it via flaps (7) and heat exchanger (14) into the open air and partly mixes it, as return air (8), via flaps (9) into the fresh-air intake duct (10), with the fresh air (11). The fresh-air fan (12) transports this mixture (8, 11) upwards via the fine filter (13) back into the work space (1), the fresh air in the intake part passing through a filter (16), the exhaust-air heat exchanger (14) and the heater (15). According to the method of operation, up to 50 % of the exhaust air (3) is fed back without the maximum work place concentration value in the work space being exceeded. This results in a heat saving of up to 50 %. The heat exchanger (14) permits a reclamation of up to 75 % of exhaust-air heat, resulting in a further heat saving of up to 38 % and thus up to 88 % total heat saving. During drying the proportion of return air can be increased in the work space to below the explosion limit. <IMAGE>
