A pump draws fluid from a reservoir and drives the fluid downstream to a spray tip where the fluid is applied to a surface. A piston is driven in a reciprocating manner to pump the fluid. A check valve is disposed downstream of the piston to regulate a flow of the fluid downstream from the piston. The pump is initially dry and is primed with fluid prior to operation. To facilitate priming, the piston is dimensioned to impact the ball and unseat a valve member of the check valve during a priming stroke, thereby ejecting any air from the pump through the check valve. With the air ejected from the pump, a vacuum is formed during a suction stroke of the piston, which draws fluid downstream from the reservoir to prime the pump.

An automated chemical fluid applicator apparatus includes a container of fluid chemical having an integrated pressurization device and an outlet for releasing the fluid chemical. A portable, battery-powered fluid pumping apparatus is retrofitable to the container and has housing having at least one fluid inlet port and at least one fluid outlet port, wherein the at least one fluid inlet port is connectable to the outlet of the container. A liquid diaphragm pump is positioned within the housing. A battery is removably connectable to a battery terminal connector formed on the housing, wherein the battery powers the liquid diaphragm pump. A control switch is positioned on the housing and controls activation of the liquid diaphragm pump to expel the quantity of fluid chemical from the at least one fluid outlet port. 1. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the pump includes a reciprocating piston fluid pump having at least two pumping chambers configured to be operated in different phases by at least one piston. In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, a reciprocating piston fluid pump includes two pistons having different displacements operated horizontally by a reduction gear and a wobble plate driven by an electric motor.

An apparatus for accurately coating discrete patches of coating on a moving substrate is described. The coating system applies coating to a moving substrate using a coating distribution device. A flow pump pumps the coating from a reservoir into the coating distributing device where a portion of the coating is deposited and the remainder is allowed to returned back to the reservoir. The coating distribution device selectively meters a portion of the coating it receives from the flow pump onto the substrate at a variable rate. When the coating distribution device transitions from metering to not metering and to reverse metering, it induces a vacuum in the coating distribution device. The induced vacuum causes a portion of the coating being distributed onto the substrate to flow in reverse quickly breaking the deposition of the coating.
