Carbon Nanotube Fiber Spun From Wetted Ribbon

A fiber of carbon nanotubes was prepared by a wet-spinning method involving drawing carbon nanotubes away from a substantially aligned, supported array of carbon nanotubes to form a ribbon, wetting the ribbon with a liquid, and spinning a fiber from the wetted ribbon. The liquid can be a polymer solution and after forming the fiber, the polymer can be cured. The resulting fiber has a higher tensile strength and higher conductivity compared to dry-spun fibers and to wet-spun fibers prepared by other methods. 1. A method for spinning a fiber of carbon nanotubes , comprising:drawing carbon nanotubes away from a substantially aligned, supported array of carbon nanotubes to form a ribbon,wetting the ribbon of carbon nanotubes with a liquid to form a wetted ribbon of carbon nanotubes, andspinning a fiber from said wetted ribbon of carbon nanotubes, wherein spinning comprises twisting wetted carbon nanotubes of the wetted ribbon around each other as carbon nanotubes are drawn away from said substantially aligned, supported array of carbon nanotubes.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of wetting the carbon nanotubes of the ribbon occurs before the carbon nanotubes are spun into a fiber.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of wetting occurs as carbon nanotubes are being twisted around each other during the spinning step.4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising drying the fiber.5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the liquid comprises an organic liquid claim 1 , an inorganic liquid claim 1 , or a combination of organic liquid and inorganic liquid.6. Shielding coatings are applied to polymer substrates for selective metallization of the substrates. The shielding coatings include a primer component and a hydrophobic top coat. The primer is first applied to the polymer substrate followed by application of the top coat component. The shielding coating is then selectively etched to form an outline of a desired current pattern. A catalyst is applied to the patterned polymer substrate followed by electroless metal plating in the etched portions. The portions of the polymer substrate which contain the shielding coating inhibit electroless metal plating. The primers contain polyamines and the top coat contains hydrophobic alky organic compounds. 1. A method of metallization of a polymer substrate comprising:a) providing a polymer substrate;b) applying a primer comprising a polyamine compound to the polymer substrate to provide a hydrophilic coating on the polymer substrate;c) applying a hydrophobic top coat directly adjacent the primer to form a shielding coating on the substrate, the hydrophobic top coat comprises one or more compounds chosen from alkyl alcohol alkoxylates, alkyl thiols, non-polymer primary alkyl amines and non-polymer secondary alkylamines;d) selectively etching the shielding coating to expose portions of the polymer substrate;e) providing a catalyst to the polymer substrate comprising the shielding coating; andf) selectively electroless metal plating the polymer substrate.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polyamine is chosen from polyalkylene polyamines and linear or branched polyalkyleneimines.4. A method for making endless lengths of nylon coated metal tubing which coating has high mechanical strength characteristics and a low gloss surface finish. The method includes passing the formed tubing through a first powder coating region and applying a layer of nylon generally uniformly surrounding the circumference of the tubing. This first nylon powder coating is heated sufficiently to cause the nylon coating to achieve complete melt-flow into a continuous first nylon coating region which would have a relatively high gloss. The coated tubing is next passed through a second powder coating region with the surface temperature of the first coating still above the melting temperature of the nylon. At this second coating region a second powder coating of the same type of nylon is applied. The second coating is cooled below the melting point of the nylon before the second coating completely melts leaving the outer surface with a very low gloss surface finish.

Shielding coatings are applied to polymer substrates for selective metallization of the substrates. The shielding coatings include a primer component and a hydrophobic top coat. The primer is first applied to the polymer substrate followed by application of the top coat component. The shielding coating is then selectively etched to form an outline of a desired current pattern. A catalyst is applied to the patterned polymer substrate followed by electroless metal plating in the etched portions. The portions of the polymer substrate which contain the shielding coating inhibit electroless metal plating.
