A method of applying a corrosion-resistant coating to a fastener including preheating an area of the fastener to be coated to elevate a temperature of the area and spraying the preheated area of the fastener with a molten or semi-molten metal. In one embodiment, a corrosion-resistant coating applicator includes a support structure, a slotted fastener conveyer supported by the support structure, a feeder configured to feed fasteners to the slotted fastener conveyer, a fastener aligner configured to align head portions of the fasteners, a heater configured to heat head portions of the fasteners as the fasteners being conveyed by the slotted fastener conveyer, and a sprayer configured to apply a corrosion-resistant coating to the heated head portions of the fasteners being conveyed. The present disclosure also provides corrosion-resistant coated fasteners made using the coating methods and/or coating apparatus.

Nails having radially offset, circular heads are manufactured from a malleable wire. The wire is clamped so that a leading portion extends axially from a clamping mechanism. The extending portion is bent at an acute angle relative to a clamping axis. The extending portion is cut so as to form a pointed end thereon and so as to leave a bent stub extending at such an angle. Such a nail head is formed from the stub, which is pressed by a punch into a cavity defined by the clamping mechanism, and which is deformed when pressed thereinto. The cavity has a fully circular, offset margin. The punch has a face covering the cavity. Once released, the wire is fed axially until a leading portion extends as before. These operations are repeated to form a similar nail in each repetition. A novel apparatus for carrying out these operations is disclosed.

An apparatus and method for collating nails wherein round head nails are fed by gravity along an inclined rail to a periphery of a rotating indexing and feed wheel. The nails are deposited into circumferentially spaced grooves formed in the periphery of the feed wheel in a vertical orientation. The feed wheel is inclined at an angle of approximately 45° and upon 180° rotation of the feed wheel the nails assume a horizontal orientation. A conveyor has a plurality of spaced segments attached to a pair of moving belts. Each segment is formed with spaced notches for receiving the nails in a horizontal spaced relationship from the feed wheel and then transporting the horizontally spaced nails to a collator for forming into a continuous strip. Rotation of the feed wheel is synchronized with movement of the conveyor by a motor, a gear train and drive shafts extending between the feed wheel and conveyor.

The present invention relates to a method of at least inhibiting metal fatigue in a tool secured in a tool holder, which tool comprises a front side shaped for use in forming of metal wire into nails, screws, etc., and which tool holder comprises a recess adapted for receiving the tool. New aspects of the method involve that the tool comprises two sides forming a wedge-shape, which is narrowing towards the front side of the tool, where the angle (A') of the wedge-shape is between 0.5 and 45 degrees, and preferably between 1 and 15 degrees. It is thereby obtained that the tool may be compressed between the sides of the recess, such that compressive stresses are introduced in the tool. Due to the angle of the wedge-shape of the tool and the recess, the compressive stresses may reach a high level. When the tool is afterwards used in the nail/screw making process, the tensile stresses caused thereby must relieve or overcome the built-in compressive stresses before a state of tensile stress in the tool can be present.
