This invention provides a system and method for aligning, feeding, trimming, slitting, rotating, cross-slitting and stacking sheets, each containing one or more discrete page images thereon that allows for greater automation of the overall process so that reduced or no manual intervention is required to generate completed book stacks or “blocks” from a stream or stack of printed sheets. Sheets are fed to a first, upstream trimming station to remove margin edges and optionally separate the sheets relative to the discrete page images. The sheets are then rotated 90 degrees and fed to a second, downstream trimming station that trims the right-angle edges and optionally separates the sheets into a final group of full-bleed pages, removing margins and gutter strips. The sheets are fed to a stacking assembly to be tacked in page order and any rejected, defective sheets or stacks are removed from the order.

A problem to be solved is to achieve higher efficiency and higher accuracy of alignment work in a printed unit block aligning device. Primary cutting and secondary cutting are performed. Then, a group of printed unit blocks is dropped from an upper rail onto a lower rail group perpendicular to the upper rail. The printed unit block aligning device includes supporting means and an alignment transfer rail. The supporting means is opened and closed between a supporting position and a releasing position. The supporting position is a position where the group of the printed unit blocks in each line unit block fed horizontally and transferred from the lower rail group is received. The alignment transfer rail receives the group of the printed unit blocks dropped in response to move of the supporting means to the releasing position, aligns the group of the printed unit blocks in each line unit block in a vertical direction, and feeds the group of the printed unit blocks vertically at a constant speed using alignment transferring means. In this structure, electrical controlling means is provided that electrically controls timing of drop from the supporting means onto the alignment transfer rail. While a speed of transfer of the horizontal feeding and transferring means is determined to be uniform for any imposition structure, the electrical controlling means controls timing of drop in a manner that depends on the numbers of layers in each vertical line in different imposition structures.

Apparatus for punching moving material webs

In order to punch a moving material web there are two punching units present, which are arranged one after another in the direction of movement of the material web. Each punching unit has two punching tools, which interact with a rotatably mounted back-pressure cylinder that can be driven. The punching tools are arranged on a rotatably mounted drive shaft that can be driven, and their position can be adjusted in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the latter and locked in various working positions. Each punching tool has a cylindrical base, to the periphery of which a punching strip which is provided with at least one punching shape is fixed such that it can be replaced. The drive shafts can be driven independently of the associated back-pressure cylinder.
