The apparatus comprises a machine for dividing the food products into portions, a control arrangement (22) for controlling the operation of the apparatus, and a sensing arrangement (28) for sensing at least one property of part of a food product (12) to be processed by the apparatus. Disclosed is a method and apparatus for removing wastepaper (W) from a continuous web (2) of photographic paper upon which photographic images (P1, P2 . . . ) have been printed. The method comprises advancing the web to a point where a cut mark is expected and sensing the presence or absence of a cut mark. If a cut mark is not sensed, the web is reversed a predetermined reverse length before the cutting knife is cycled. By reversing the web the predetermined reverse length, it is assured that any length of wastepaper cut from the web will at least be as long as the reverse length. Product 11 such as ham or sausage is advanced toward the slicing region 31 to be cut by blade 29 into slices all of the same weight. The weight of a slice will depend on the thickness of the slice, the contour of the slice and the inner structure of the slice (proportion of fat to lean). Thus by measuring the contour and inner structure progressively during the slicing operation and controlling the slice thickness accordingly slices of constant weight can be attained even at high slicing rates. The contour and structure is measured by an optoelectronic detector using sequential detection procedures. The slicing region is illuminated by the radiation source 19 and radiation reflected from the cut surfaces of the slices to be cut off and from the marginal regions of the slices is detected by detector 23 and evaluated by processor 25.
