The elements are thus constrained to slide only in a direction parallel to the upright (14). A clamping screw (36) threadedly engaged in the stud can be tightened to lock the adjustable support at a desired position. The arrangement provides high stability to permit adjustment of the motor position even when the motor is operating.

A decorative pattern is first designed using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software that encapsulates the decorative pattern and is subsequently saved to a computer file that is readable by the CAD software. The system includes a position encoding device that is coupled to the blade adjustment mechanism of the tool. The encoder provides position feedback information to a microprocessor which is programmed to calculate the amount of blade adjustment made relative to a preselected reference positioned. In the preferred embodiment, a mercury switch is provided which is interrogated by the microprocessor to determine the orientation of the tool so that the orientation of the digital display can be controlled accordingly. In this manner, the display automatically appears rightside up even when the blade adjustment is made with the tool upside down. A mode select switch is also provided for selecting between English and Metric units.

A tool or machine in which the relative portion of two components is adjustable has setting means operable in a first mode to set the two components approximately to a desired setting and in a second mode to adjust the approxi­ mate setting accurately to a required setting. A tool for routing has a base plate (1) and a depth stop comprising a post (6) extending upwardly from the base plate, a first collar (8) movable along the post, a screw thread on the outer surface of the first collar, and a second collar (12) whose bore is screw-threaded screwed over the first collar. The post (6) includes a surface in the form of a toothed rack, the first collar has a bore one portion of whose surface is formed to engage one or more teeth (7) on the rack to lock the first collar (8) in a selected one of a number of predetermined positions along the post and a spring (11) resiliently biases the first collar into engagement with the toothed rack. A scale (14) operating with a fiducial mark is provided.

A plunge type router is disclosed which includes a base housing having a work engaging surface and an upper portion within which a driving motor is supportingly mounted for reciprocable movement with respect thereto. A pair of extension coil springs are provided extending between a first pair of projections provided on the upper portion of the base housing and a second pair of projections secured to the motor housing which operate to continuously bias the driving motor into a retracted position. The extension springs are arranged in the form of loops positioned on opposite sides of the router and are concealed and protected by a pair of handles secured to the motor housing which handles are movable therewith.

A simple, low cost, light weight biscuit jointer (21) comprises an elongated motor housing (23), a motor end cap assembly (25) fixed to one end of housing (23) and a base assembly (27) for engagement with a workpiece. To form a biscuit receiving slot in a workpiece, the motor housing (23) and end cap assembly (25) are pivoted relative to base assembly (27) for sweeping a an elongated, generally cylindrical bit (29) through an opening (31) in a base plate (33). The sweeping action is effected by an operator rotating a handle (35) fixed to end cap assembly (25) counterclockwise (Fig. 2) relative to base assembly (27). A handle (37) is used to stabilize base assembly (27) as house assembly (23) is pivoted to form the slot.

A mounting frame is provided including first and second relatively stationarily located support portions disposed on opposite sides of an upstanding reference plane. The first support portion includes a horizontal tabletop for supporting a workpiece and the second portion includes a base guidingly supported from the frame for rectilinear shifting along a horizontal path paralleling the plane, a vertical column vertically shiftable relative to the base, a mount carried by an upper portion of the column and router support structure for supporting a router in horizontal position with its output shaft disposed normal to the aforementioned reference plane and projecting toward the latter. The mount is supported from the upper end of the column for rectilinear shifting in a path normal to the reference plane. The tabletop is adjustable horizontally toward and away from the reference plane and a vertically adjustable support parallels the reference plane and supports a template therefrom engageable by a template follower adjustably supported from the aforementioned mount atop the column. Structure is provided for limiting shifting of the base and mount in both directions relative to the mounting frame and the column and the tabletop includes selectively usable workpiece alignment and auxiliary fence members positionable along the marginal edge of the tabletop adjacent the reference plane in position paralleling the latter.

A support fixture for a hand-held power tool includes a base plate and a guide plate assembly supported for movement relative to the base plate to bring the working end of the power tool into contact with a workpiece on which the base plate is supported. The guide plate assembly includes a tool support housing configured for supporting the body of the power tool, and an overthrow nut assembly for threaded engagement with a threaded portion of the power tool adjacent the working end of the tool. The fixture includes a guide bushing that is top-loaded into a bushing collar defined in the base plate, in which the guide bushing is configured to engage a template supported on the workpiece. A threaded plug holds the guide bushing within the bushing collar.
