A precompactor near the end of an entrance chute into the apparatus uniformly predensifies the incoming fiber prior to its compaction by means of a ram. The ram is carried on roller bearings especially adapted to withstand the weight and other forces associated with the continuous movement of the ram. A composite dry process hardboard includes a hardboard panel consisting of pressed defibrated and refined wood chips, plus a surface layer of paper cemented to the hardboard by a cured resin made from phenolic resin mixed with water and ethylene glycol. If desired, an embossed pattern may be incorporated into pressing the paper overlay. In the subject process, first a mass of defibrated wood chips is mixed with a binding agent, the mass is then formed into a mat which is coated with a mixture of phenolic resin and a polyhydric compound such as a polyhydric alcohol having a boiling point higher than water. Then, a dry sheet of paper is laid on the mat and the composite structure is then cured by the application of heat and pressure.

Methods of manufacturing a fire-retardant treated OSB to avoid press build-up issues with prior art fire retardants such as boric acid when subjected to normal heat and pressure used in forming an OSB panel. In one embodiment, the press temperature is reduced to below the melting point or softening temperature of the boric acid and/or prior art fire retardants, with a fast-cure adhesive system used in the mat to provide sufficient bonding and integrity while using a lower press temperature. Alternatively, a zinc borate or calcium borate dispersion, with melting points higher than normal press temperatures, is applied to the wood strands prior to pressing. The zinc borate and/or calcium borate are not melted or softened during the OSB manufacturing process, thereby avoiding the press build-up issues with boric acid.

A weatherproof fibreboard panel is produced by spraying, sprinkling or pouring a plastic composition comprising polyvinyl chloride and a volatile plasticizer with or without a stabilizer, dye, pigment and/or a non volatile plasticizer, on to a panel still hot from a hot press, passing the coated fibreboard panel through a heated space in which it is subjected firstly to a temperature of 200 DEG C, and subsequently to 165 DEG to 175 DEG C. to obtain a coating of at least 0,18 mm. thickness and then adjusting the moisture content of the coated fibreboard panel to a desired value. The plastic composition may include or may have subsequently applied thereon water- or mould fungus-repelling chemical agents. A simulated wood veneer product is disclosed. The simulated wood veneer product includes a paper substrate and an imprintable wood fiber material applied to one side of the paper substrate. The fibreboard according to claim 4 , wherein the periodically recurring deformations of the fibreboards which are placed on top of each other are arranged at angles with respect to each other such that the deformations do not extend parallel to one another.6. The fibers are pre-compacted in a press at pressing temperatures below 110°C to obtain reactive fiberboard. Pre-compacted fiberboard is pressed to produce panels at temperatures from 130°C to 180°C. The method of this invention adheres a low emissivity radiant barrier material to an underlying lignocellulosic substrate within the primary manufacturing operation of the underlying lignocellulosic substrate. Thus, a radiant barrier covered substrate is formed by integrally joining the radiant barrier covering to a mat of lignocellulosic material during consolidation thereof with a first adhesive bonding material to form an underlying substrate. The integral joining operation can, for example, be accomplished by bonding the radiant barrier covering to a lignocellulosic mat in a product formation press. This is typically accomplished using a second adhesive bonding material for adhesion of the radiant barrier material to the lignocellulosic mat, and a first adhesive bonding material for consolidating the lignocellulosic mat to form a lignocellulosic substrate. More specifically, this invention is directed to a method whereby a low emissivity radiant barrier material is joined in situ to a mat of lignocellulosic particles using a second adhesive material, during the consolidation of the lignocellulosic particles and a first adhesive bonding material to form an underlying substrate, an integral laminated radiant barrier covered lignocellulosic product being produced.

A reinforcing panel (22) and process for making the same for use in reinforcing wood structural members uncluding laminated beams, wood I-beams, and trusses. The reinforcing panel is comprised of a plurality of synthetic fibers (24) that are arranged parallel to one another and aligned with the longitudinal direction of the panel, and accordingly the wood structure. The panel has substantially no transverse fibers. The fibers are maintained in position by a resin encasement (26) that completely encloses the fibers with the exception of some fibers that are closest to the surface. The surface of the reinforcing panel is treated so that those fibers (28) closest to the surface of the panel are caused to 'hair up' so that the reinforcing panel may be used with nonepoxy adhesives which are commonly used in the laminated beam industry, such as resorcinal. The reinforcing panel of the present invention is fabricated by an improved pultrusion process which uses no mandrels, or woven mats and which provides for a selectable back pressure so that the fibers of the reinforcement panel are maintained in a state of tension during the resin cure, thereby: maintaining the parallel arrangement of the fibers, maintaining the longitudinal alignment of the fibers, and setting the initial strain of the fibers to decrease the initial deflection of a wood structure that is reinforced with the reinforcing panel of the present invention.

These are prepd. from a thin layer of wood, plastic laminate metal or other material as the visible side of the panel, and a supporting layer of wood or wood conglomerate. These materials are cut to the correct size and thickness and foamed polystyrene sheets connected to the correct thickness with an abrasion machine so that the sheet has a flat contacting surface. The opposite sides of the supporting layer are impregnated with a suitable adhesive. The panels have a low cost and have good thermal and acoustical insulation and are resistant to abrasion and ageing.

Resin (e.g. melamine)-impregnated papers as decoration applied to pressboard, plywood, veneers etc. are pressed together in a stack press hot, then cooled. The hot-pressed and thus decorated boards are fed into a permanently cooled plate press which has as many tiers as the stack press and also the attached press platen for cooling and quenching. The hot-pressed decorated board leaves the stack press at e.g. 150 degrees C and is then pressed with the platens or glossing sheet in a press at e.g. 30 degrees C.

A method of forming a surface layer is disclosed. The surface layer includes first, second, and third layers. The method includes forming a first layer comprising at least 50% by weight of fibres, forming a second layer comprising at least 50% by weight of wear resistant particles, forming a third layer comprising at least 50% by weight of particles of a thermosetting binder, and applying heat and pressure to the first, second, and third layers. The first layer is applied to a core, the core being a wood fibre based board. The fibres, the wear resistant particles and the thermosetting binder are applied in separate layers directly on the core and each other. The heat and pressure of the pressing operation is used to combine and mix the fibres, wear resistant particles and the thermosetting binder after application on the core.

Board of lignocellulose-containing material and a method of manufacturing such board. The material is disintegrated to particles or fibres, dried, glued prior to or after the drying, formed to a mat and finally dried by hot pressing to a finished board. According to the invention, the lignin is modified chemically at least in the surface layer of the particles or fibers prior to the final drying, so that an increased binding reactivity is obtained by the introduction of hydrophilic groups and so that the softening temperature of the lignin is lowered. Thereby the lignocellulose material in the board is partially sulphonated so that the organically combined sulphur exceeds the native sulphur content of the material but is lower than 0.4 %.

The present invention concerns a method for the manufacture of a wood-based panel comprising providing wood fibers which are impregnated with a phenolic resin, the ratio of resin (based on the solids content) to wood fibers being 10 to 50 % by weight. The impreganted fibers are pre-compacted in a press at press temperatures below 110 °C to a chemically reactive fiber board and then pressed to compact panels at temperatures between 130 and 180 °C.
