A composite panel comprises a core at least one surface of which has a coating containing particles of cellulose or wood dust having a length of 0.3-0.5 mm embedded in a polymerised substance constituted by a resin of urea or melamine. The core may be of agglomerated plant particles or fibres, or a sheet of metal e.g. aluminium. The coating may be transparent or opaque and may contain a metallic powder. The panel is prepared by placing the core in a press with at least one metal sheet on one side of the core or with separate metal sheets on opposite sides of the core the inner face of the or each metal sheet being coated with a mixture of a powdered urea or melamine resin and a coloured or colourless filler containing cellulose or wood dust fibres having a length of 0.3-0.5 mm the mixture being insoluble in aqueous solutions, and in contact with the core and pressing the metal sheet or sheets and core together at an elevated temperature to coat the core with said mixture.
