In a method of moulding articles in synthetic plastics, plasticised plastics material is fed by a screw within a cylinder, along the cylinder to a nozzle from whence the material is injected into the mould cavity. The feeding of the material into the mould cavity is however effected by rotation of the screw almost in its forwardmost position instead of by longitudinal movement of the screw from its rearwardmost to its forwardmost position. The longitudinal position of the screw is adjusted during filling of the mould cavity by biasing means acting axially on the screw and controlled by means sensing the position of the screw. The temperature distribution throughout the cylinder, the nozzle, the screw and the screw tip is controlled by separate cooling circuits for the various zones, the various cooling circuits coming into operation at various times during a moulding cycle, as determined by timing means.

The vanes divide the upper channel into a plurality of radially extending channel segments. A powered plunger extends between the vanes of each of the channel segments to vary the cross-sectional area of the channel segments.

Such an arrangement allows separation of the die parts to facilitate cleaning thereof. The extruder (B), Fig. 1 (not shown), is reciprocated by a double-acting fluid-pressure motor (20), and to ensure mating and correct alignment of the die parts when the extruder is moved towards the calender, keys 60, Fig. 2, and key slots 61 are provided, see also Fig. 3 (not reproduced), and the lower side faces 50 of the die part 42 are inclined and engage similarly inclined surfaces 51 on frame members 52, the die part being held in position by transversely movable wedge locks 65. Surfaces 51 are formed by replaceable wear plates 54, e.g. of hard bronze, and movement towards the calender is limited by adjustable stop-screws 55. Wedge locks 65 are reciprocated by fluidpressure motors (71), Fig. 3 (not shown). The extrusion orifice 43 is situated somewhat above the nip of calender rolls 30, 31 and during operation, die part 41 may be attached to the extruder by means of bolts 47. As shown, a carbonaceous particle-pitch mass may be fed via hopper 10 into the bore 11 in the barrel B of a mixer M. The barrel may be provided with teeth 12, 12' which are circumferentially spaced and project radially inwardly and which cooperate with interrupted helical threads or blades 13 on shaft 14, which is simultaneously rotated and reciprocated. One of the teeth may be provided with a bore through which liquid coolant, e.g. water or carbon dioxide, is injected into the mass in the bore of the barrel. The latter may be provided with annular passages 9, 9a through which heat transfer fluid(s) may be circulated. The temperature of the fluid circulated through passage 9a may be less than that of the fluid passed through passage 9. The blended mass may be discharged from the barrel into a section 24 open to atmosphere in which the liquid coolant vaporises and further mixing is continued before exit through opening 28. The rate at which liquid coolant is added may be regulated according to the temperature of the blend discharged through opening 28, the temperature being measured by means of a sensor 39.

The plastics extruder includes a screw extruder, a screen downstream of the screw extruder, a throttle located between the screw extruder and the screen, a moulding tool downstream of the screen, and a melt index measuring device. The measuring device includes a metering pump whose rotational speed is controllable and which is provided with a rotational speed indicator, a measuring nozzle disposed in a sample flow channel, and pressure and temperature sensors connected to the sample flow channel directly upstream of the inlet of the measuring nozzle. The sample flow channel is adapted to be located downstream of the screen pack and upstream of the moulding tool. For the purpose of regulating the viscosity of the plastics material melted in the screw extruder, the throttle cross-section is variable by a servomotor connected to the output of a programmable two-coordinate controller. The characteristic of the controller provides a desired value output and can be predetermined as a temperature-pressure characteristic when the metering pump is operated with constant delivery, or as a temperature-delivery characteristic when the metering pump is operated with a constant pressure drop via the measuring nozzle while the temperature sensor is connected to one of two actual value inputs of the two coordinate controller. Either the pressure sensor or the rotational speed indicator is connected to the second actual value input.

An extruder screw of lower capacity may be fed with the heat plasticized material from a separate screw feed extruder of higher capacity which may act to blend different materials, supplied thereto, e.g. by a force ram feed, and may be provided with water or steam temperature control means, the excess capacity being relieved from a conduit connecting the extruders through an orifice, which is replaceably located or is of the variable iris type, and conveyed by feedback means, e.g. an extrusion screw, to the supply of new material upstream of the inlet of the higher capacity extruder, with each extrusion screw having a separate variable speed drive. The excess capacity may be 10% in excess of the discharge rate, but may be as great as two or three times, e.g. for blending purposes. In the preferred embodiment, the excess capacity is relieved from a single extrusion screw 12 at a barrel orifice 27 and returned, by a separately driven screw 36, at a barrel orifice 17 to sections D, A of the screw 12, which is supplied with unplasticized material from a hopper 15. A blown-film extrusion apparatus for manufacturing a tubular polymer film (1) comprises an extruder (2); a solidification ring for solidifying a tubular element produced by the extruder and for forming the film by delivering cooling air on the tubular element at a given cooling height, and a film conveyor for conveying the film upwards. The apparatus also comprises a delivery device (80) for projecting correction air on the tubular element, in order to locally correct the thickness of the film, comprising a distribution chamber (78); a plurality of air delivery members (81') with delivery channels (37) whose delivery mouths (33',33") are arranged about said axis (25) of the apparatus for projecting correction air partial streams (19') on respective angular correction positions, between the die and the cooling height; flow control elements (68) between the distribution chamber (78), and the inlet (32) of respective air delivery members, configured for adjusting the flowrate of the respective correction air stream (19') according to an adjustment signal. According to an aspect of the invention, a plurality of separate radial ducts (45) is provided defining respective delivery channels (37) and spaced apart, at an own end portion, by separation spaces, so that the correction air partial streams, after hitting the tubular element in the respective angular correction positions, can flow away from the tubular element through said separation spaces. According to another aspect of the invention, the distribution chamber (78) is defined by an upper ring (161) and by a lower ring (159) connected to each other by means of tight fixed joints with a first substantially cylindrical wall (151) and with a second substantially cylindrical wall arranged around the first cylindrical wall, wherein possible separate radial ducts of the air delivery members protrude from the first cylindrical wall (151).
