Film-blowing machine, producing film tubing from an extruder with stationary blowing head, has a draw-off arrangement whereby the tubing is laid flat in an arrangement which oscillates about a vertical axis and has traction rollers with horizontal axes. At least two diverter rods with horizontal axes are positioned between that arrangement and a stationary reeling point; these rods can turn relative to the arrangement concerned. The first rod swivels about a vertical axis at a distance from the vertical axis of the blowing machine itself, and the rod axis plus the oscillating arrangement turn about the vertical axis of the machine. The second rod also turns about a vettical axis at a distance from the main machine axis; the final film tubing passes from this second rod to its reel-up in a plane which is parallel to the plane through the main machine axis and the vertical axis of the second rod.

The invention relates to multi- layer polymeric structure, especially film, which can be produced by irradiation crosslinking of the polymer of a first layer without damage to the heat- sealability of a heat-sealable second layer. By including in the first layer a chemical component which when blended with a polymer in the melt form produces a material which crosslinks to a greater extent under irradiation than does the same polymer alone, it is possible to reduce the dosage of irradiation required for satisfactory cross-linking and thereby reduce or prevent damage to heat-sealing characteristics of the second layer. Applicants have discovered that certain polyethylene (PE) homopolymers or copolymers of ethylene and C 3 to C 10 alpha-olefin monomers are more suitable for oriented processes than other polyethylene resins In an aspect, the PE has a MFI of 0.3 g/10 min. to 5.0 g/10 min., a melting point of from 110° C. to 140° C., a density of from 0.912 g/cm 3 to 0.965 g/cm 3 (%), a haze of 10% or less, a clarity of at least 90, and a gloss of at least 60. The polyethylene is heated and formed into an article, cooled, and then the article is stretch oriented. In an embodiment, the film, tape, the melt extruded, injection blow molded, injection stretch blow molded, cast, and thermoformed articles that can be produced with this polyethylene has a thickness of 0.1 mil to 100 mils. The polyethylene exhibits excellent elasticity, toughness, stretch and optical properties for such applications.

A nonwoven composite that exhibits latent elastic properties is provided. More specifically, latent elasticity may be imparted by blending a thermoplastic elastomer with a polyolefin that is capable of forming semi-crystalline domains among the amorphous elastomeric chains, and then forming a film from the blend. The film is then stretched in one or more directions to orient the amorphous elastomer chains. Without intending to be limited by theory, the present inventors believe that the oriented state of the amorphous chains may be held in place by the relatively stiff semi-crystalline olefin domains. Subsequently, the stretched film may be activated (e.g., heated) to shrink the film and provide it with “latent” stretchability. For instance, the stretched film may be heated at or above the softening temperature of the polyolefin to soften the crystalline domains and allow the amorphous chains to return to their unoriented state. As a result of the present invention, the elastic film may be extended and recover from its unoriented state.

The resins can have reduced or substantially eliminated concentrations of low molecular weight components. A process for the manufacture of polyolefin film, especially high density polyethylene film, is disclosed. In the process molten polyolefin is extruded through an annular die and the tubular molten polyolefin film so formed is withdrawn from the die, expanded, cooled and flattened. The process is controlled so that (a) the ratio of the diameter of the expanded tubular film to the diameter of the annular die is in the range 1.8:1 to 5:1, (b) the frost line formed as the polyolefin cools is at least four feet from the annular die, (c) the completion of the expansion of the tubular film is juxtaposed to, and prior to, the formation of the frost line. The ratio of diameters and the frost line are co-operatively adjusted with the rate at which the film is withdrawn from the annular die and the temperature at which the molten polymer is extruded through the die so that the Elmendorf tear in the machine direction is at least 15 gms./mil. In an embodiment the Elmendorf tear in the machine direction is at least 30 gms./mil. In another embodiment the ratio of the Elmendorf tear in the machine direction to that in the transverse direction is at least 0.3. The film is especially useful in the manufacture of bags, e.g., notion and millinery bags.

The film is then rotated, and the physical property profile is measured a second time. Again, the physical property of the longitudinal sections at the ends of the rotated film are determined by dividing their measured value by two. Disclosed is a composition that comprises or is produced from a first ethylene α-olefin copolymer, a modified first ethylene α-olefin copolymer, and a second ethylene α-olefin copolymer or propylene α-olefin copolymer. Also disclosed is a multilayer film or sheet structure containing at least one barrier layer; at least one predominantly propylene-based layer, at least one predominantly ethylene-based layer, or both; and at least one adhesive layer produced from the composition. Further disclosed is a produced for producing a multilayer structure using the composition as adhesive layer.

A heat-shrinkable backseamed casing film comprises a first layer, a second layer, and a third layer, with the first and third layers being outer layers and the second layer being between the first layer and the third layer. The first outer layer serves as an inside casing layer, and comprises polyolefin; the second layer comprises polyester and/or polyamide; the third layer serves as an outside casing layer and comprises polyolefin, polystyrene, and/or polyamide. The second layer has a thickness of at least about 5% of a total thickness of the heat-shrinkable casing film. Alternatively, the first layer comprises polyolefin and has a surface energy level of less than about 34 dynes/cm; the second layer comprises a polyamide having a melting point of at least 300° F.; and the third layer comprises polyolefin, polystyrene and/or polyamide. A package comprises a cooked meat product within the backseamed casing. The second layer of the casing film prevents or reduces necking down on the forming shoe during backseaming. The backseamed casing is especially useful for cook-in applications.

A seamless parison extruded from an extruder via an annular die, passes through a calibrator and coaxially surrounds a probe pipe, which is made to extend through the annular die beyond the calibrator. On the probe pipe there is mounted a sealing element. Ahead of the sealing element, a pressure equal to atmospheric pressure prevails inside the tube and, after the sealing element, a higher pressure than atmospheric pressure prevails. The pressurization is achieved in that a second belt take-off folds together the tube, so that the compressed air fed in through the probe pipe causes a higher tube internal pressure, since the sealing element bears in a sealing manner against the inside of the tube. As a result, a substantial pressure separation is effected at the point of the sealing element. In a first heating chamber, the tube is heated to the stretching temperature and is transported by a second belt take-off at a stretching speed, increased relative to the take-off speed of the first belt take-off, to a second heating chamber, in which a heat setting of the tube takes place. From the heating chamber, the tube is transported onward at the same, greater or lower speed than the stretching speed by a third belt take-off and wound up by a deflection roller onto a wind-up roller.

The film may further comprise a propylene-derived resin having a density of about 0.86 to about 0.91 g/cm3. The films have excellent mechanical and optical properties and double-bubble extrusion processability.
