Mounted on the chains 202 are clamps 217 each comprising an upper spring member 220 mounting roller 223 which rides over an opening member 229 at each side of the web having a cam 230 which forces the end 235 of a spring 220 away from the clamp base 218. Initially the web margins lie over the springs 220 but as each is moved against the tucking edge 237 of a plate 231 it is forced under the spring end 235. The clamp 217 then closes on the web as the rollers 223 move off the cams and the edges of the web are thus securely gripped. Rollers 225, 226 run in guides alongside the chain, the guides for the former ensuring transverse tautness in the web.

A novel molded fabric is made by bringing a first patterned group of numerous discrete disjoint elements positioned on a first side of a contact boundary extending throughout the thickness of the fabric being molded, together with a second patterned group of numerous discrete disjoint elements, over-lapping the first group of discrete disjoint elements, on the opposite side of the contact boundary, and joining the elements together at their tip portions. Various techniques are disclosed for maintaining separation of overlapping cross-over portions of the thread elements crossing each other during joining the terminal portions together, so that they simulate woven cloth. First and second rolls can carry the elements in molten form within cavities in the roller surfaces or patterns of solid elements within first and second matrices, can be joined together at the nip of the rolls by heat or chemical means to produce substantial savings in fabric manufacture.

A system for forming a waterproof seam between to sewn materials. The seam is formed using an adhesive coated thread. A thin strip of adhesive is placed between the two materials at the seam line. As the coated thread is sewn into the seam heat and pressure are simultaneously applied, melting the adhesive coating thereby filling the needle punctures. The melted adhesive coating will also flow into the areas between the needles punctures and between the materials. The heat and pressure applied to the coated thread will also melt the adhesive strip, causing additional adhesive to flow into the needle punctures and the areas between needle punctures.

Sequential melting may occur through use of a welding tip configured to reduce air pockets, a tapering the height of a plurality of energy directors, and/or tapering the energy directors themselves, all of which reduce the size of an energy transfer area produced by thermal energy. The present technology also includes a method for joining workpieces using energy such as ultrasonic energy that concentrates at a location within a weld area causing sequential melting of a plurality of energy directors using the aforementioned features.

The cells are hollow chambers that resist deflection due to compressive forces, similar to compression springs. The arrays are attached to one or more intermedial binding layers. The intermedial binding layer(s) links the cells together while allowing the cells to deform independently of one another. An external load compresses one of the void cells within an independent compression range without significantly compressing at least one void cell adjacent the compressed void cell. The independent compression range is the displacement range of the compressed void cell that does not significantly affect the compression of adjacent void cells. If the void cell is compressed beyond the independent compression range, the intermedial binding layers may be deflected and/or the void cells adjacent the compressed void cell may be compressed. 1. A method comprising:applying a cushioning material to a curved surface shaped to provide support for a portion of a human body, the material comprising a first matrix of void cells opposing a second matrix of void cells, wherein at least two of the void cells in the first matrix are coupled to at least two of the void cells in the second matrix via an intermedial binding layer and at each void cell of the first matrix and the second matrix includes an opening in continuous fluid communication with an environment external to the cushioning material, wherein the cushioning material provides a barrier between the portion of the human body and the curved surface.2. The fluid nozzle may be adapted to direct a fluid radially outward through the drum aperture toward the substrates. The fluid may have a temperature sufficient to at least partially melt the substrates. An anvil roll may be located adjacent the drum. The anvil roll may be adapted to rotate about an axis of rotation. A press member may be moveably connected to the drum and located radially inward from the drum aperture. The disposable wearing article has a laminated stretchable structure, in which an elastic sheet of a thermoplastic resin is laminated between a first sheet layer made of nonwoven fabric and a second sheet layer made of nonwoven fabric.
