In mfg. upholstery material, partic. for operating tables where foam pads are contained between layers of film or film-coated fibres, the films (4,5) are welded. Pref. at least one film (4) is of a natural fibre material with a plastics cladding with a welding booster used for the natural fibre treatment before welding, and the natural fibres are treated with a solvent such as a nitro thinner. The welding action is applied directly after the solvent has been spread, using HF welding. In addition, the films (4,5) are welded to the cushion (3) between them, at least locally (11). As the film sections are folded over and welded at the edges, a bowl is developed for the cushion to be laid in place, and the edge is then welded to the other film. The welding is applied while the bowl is held in a support frame. ADVANTAGE - The technique gives a sealed material, which is durable, clean and mechanically strong.

A laminate or a laminated article with integrated raised zones having the appearance of buttons, borders, surrounds, folds or the like is specified. A process for producing such a laminated article is also specified. The laminated article consists of a textile or vinyl synthetic resin cover layer, a foam intermediate layer and a layer of substrate material, for example a polyamide. A shaped article having the desired shape for the raised zone is inserted between the foam layer and the cover material layer. Anhydric polyurethane foam-forming materials are applied in liquid form onto the foam layer, the contact surface of the cover material and the contact surface of the substrate material. Before the lamination, the layers are placed on a mould, the shaped articles being arranged directly above those mould projections which follow the contours of the mould projections. Moisture is introduced into the foamable material and a heated press is caused to act on the substrate material, the layers lying one above the other being pressed downwards against the mould. The press force with simultaneous heat supply causes a foaming reaction of the foamable material, leading to a foam adhesive layer which substantially adhesively bonds the cover material to the substrate material in the zone surrounding the shaped articles. The binder layer also bonds the cover material and the substrate material to the other surfaces of the foam layer.

Improvements relating to the manufacture of upholstered panels using dielectric heating

[Also in Group VIII] In the formation of an upholstered panel using radio frequency dielectric heating to bond two sheets of material forming the sides of the panel, pressure is applied to selected portions of the panel to compress them in sequence progressively over the area of the panels, the portions then being bonded while they are under pressure. Undue strain in the material forming the sides of the panel is thus avoided. As shown in Fig. 3, electrodes 14a-14e are lowered in sequence to compress portions of material 8 and 12, the cover material 8 moving from right to left over wadding 10 without undue stretching. Welding power is then applied between the electrodes 14 and the common electrode 18 and bonding takes place. The backing material 12 of the panel so formed remains approximately flat and a pronounced quilting effect is produced on the upper surface of the panel. Unnecessary compression of the wadding layer may be reduced by loading bars 36, Fig. 6, which consist of a series of rods or strips, and are inserted under the cover material before the bonding operation. Withdrawal of the bars after the fluting welds have been completed results in a maximum formed shape of the cover 8 and a deep upholstered appearance of the panel. The cover material and backing material may be thermoplastic sheeting, e.g. P.V.C., which may be either unsupported or supported on an open-weave backing cloth. The wadding may consist of felt, cellulose, paper, sponge rubber, foamed vinyl, polyurethane foam, or synthetic fibre ; coatings or sheets of glues or resins may be used to promote the bond between the cover and backing. Pneumatic rams or a series of cams may operate the movable electrodes which may be given a shape corresponding to the form of the indentations required.

An apparatus for shaping a piece of porous resilient material or for laminating steam permeable material to a porous substrate is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a top contoured die which is perforated across its contact surface and which has an enclosed chamber behind its contact surface which is in communication with the perforations of the die. A complementary bottom die (optional) is also perforated across its contact surface. Hot melt adhesive is interleaved between the steam permeable material and the porous substrate. The top die is adapted to be preheated prior to pressing it and the workpiece together. Means are provided to deliver a shot of superheated steam through the perforations of the top die into the enclosed chamber of the contoured die, while the die and workpiece are pressed together, to melt the adhesive. Means are provided for passing a cooling gas, which means preferably applies a vacuum, to pull ambient air through the workpiece while it and the die are pressed together. The resolidified adhesive holds the porous resilient material in its deformed shape and laminates the steam permeable material to the porous substrate.

A method of manufacturing a padded part is provided. The padded part is primarily for use in an item of wear that may be a load-bearing harness or belt. The method includes the steps of providing a first sheet of a flexible material on one side of which is located at least one fastener. A second sheet of flexible material is provided and a layered assembly is created including, in order, the first sheet of material such that said one side of the first sheet is outermost, apiece of mouldable padding, and the second sheet of flexible material. Hot melt adhesive layers are provided between the padding and the sheets of flexible material. The layered assembly is moulded in a press after or during heating of the layered assembly thereby simultaneously bonding the layers of the assembly together and moulding the layered assembly into a predetermined shape.

The powdered synthetic resin may be of polyamides or modified polyamides. The rim is then secured in a groove of a substrate, e.g. by an adhesive, by heat welding, or mechanically, e.g. by a location fit that is possible due to the rigidity of the rim.

A laminated fabric having an integral raised area formed therein which simulates the appearance of a button, welt or the like, and method of making same. The laminated fabric is comprised of a layer of cloth or vinyl cover material, an intermediate layer of foam and a layer of backing material such as nylon. A form having the shape which corresponds to the desired shape of the raised area is disposed between the foam layer and the cover material. Anhydrous polyurethane foam forming materials are applied in liquid form to the form layer and cover material contact surface and the form layer and backing material contact surface. The unlaminated layers are placed over a die with each of the forms being positioned immediately above a die having protrusions which generally circumscribe the form. Moisture is introduced into the foam forming material and a heated press is applied to the backing material forcing the unlaminated layers down against the die. The resultant heat and pressure cause a foaming reaction of the foam forming materials which results in a foam bonding layer which bonds the cover material in substantial contact with the backing material in the region surrounding the form. The bonding layer also bonds the cover material and the backing material to substantially all of the remainder surface area of the foam layer.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for manufacturing a door pad by the application of ultrasonic wave is provided, which com-prises the steps of putting a surface layer material, a filler padding made of normal polyurethane which is not subjected to any previous treatment and a backing board, in a laminated state, between ultrasonic machining horns and ultrasonic machining horn rests, and applying ultra-sonic vibration to desired portions of said laminate by the ultrasonic machining horns. Also, a door pad manufac-tured by ultrasonic welding is provided, which comprises a laminate consisting of a surface layer material, a filler padding or polyurethane molding made of normal polyurethane which is not subjected to any treatment and a backing board, wherein desired portions of said laminate are fusion-bonded by heat produced therein by ultrasonic vibration. The door pad according to this invention is excellent in physical properties and cheap in price.

The laminate web is formed of a liquid pervious first material and a liquid pervious second material attached to the first material. The first material has an effective open area of at least about 10 percent and a plurality of apertures with an effective size of at least than 0.2 square millimeters. The second material has an effective open area of at least about 10 percent and a plurality of apertures with an effective size of at least 0.2 square millimeters. The apertures of the second material are aligned with the apertures of the first material. The second material preferably has a hydrophilicity which is greater than the hydrophilicity of the first material.

A trim panel, having a finish material cover layer (40b) bonded to a heat responsive backing material (40), for example, for covering the interior surface of a car door, is made in a molding apparatus in such a way that the contoured edges (42) of the molding tool form a finished panel rim around the trim panel simultaneously with the molding of the trim panel. The backing material (40) is, for example, a thermoplastic foam and/or a thermoplastic fleece material which is heated for the molding. The cover material (40b) for the finish cover layer is, for example, cloth that is cooled during the pressing, to avoid damage to the cover material. The finished rim is formed by shaping the surface layer material (40b) and simultaneously densifying the material of the backing material (40) at least along the edge of the panel without any need for folding the cover layer (40b) around the panel edges. The rim is then secured in a groove of a substrate, e.g. by an adhesive, by heat welding, or mechanically, e.g. by a location fit that is possible due to the rigidity of the rim. <IMAGE>
