For this purpose, after selective comminution, fragments of polystyrene foam scrap are softened in a press which can be heated by steam and are compressed to form a slab essentially in the form of a right parallelepiped. The slab, which obtains numerous voids if compression is low, is cut up into drainage boards once it has cooled. Polystyrene foam slabs produced by compressing by about 1/3 are cut up thermally, whilst still in the warm state, into lathing boards, the fissured surface of which forms a base surface to which a plaster can adhere.

In a process for processing moulded packaging units made from expandable polystyrene which is foamed with the aid of a foaming agent, the units are ground up to produce granules of below 25 mm in size and the granulated material (36) is then introduced into a bath (20) of water to which boric acid or boron salt and/or boric acid natron and/or calcium borate has been added. The granulated material (36) is passed through the bath, its operating temperature being around 40-130 DEG C, preferably 80-110 DEG C, and is then dried. The bath (20) flows in direction (x) and the relative proportions of water and additive are between 7:1 and 4:1, in particular 6:1. The apparatus used comprises a tank (10) for the temperature-controlled bath (20), at least one flat unit (17, 18) or similar guide unit which is submerged in the bath, and a discharge unit (38) which protrudes into the bath at the end (22) of the tank.

A process for the preparation of thermal insulation sheets fashioned from certain unseparated mixtures of post-consumer plastic articles and the article, itself, is disclosed. The mixtures of such articles contain polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS) and optionally also articles made of high density polyethylene (HDPE). An unseparated mixture of such articles is provided. This mixture is crushed and shredded to form plastic flakes, and these plastic flakes are then homogenized. Homogenization of the flakes can be carried out either by melt-blending them or by further comminution to produce very fine particles of the mixed plastics. The resulting homogenized mixture of plastic types is then compression molded into sheets ranging in thickness from about 3 to 10 mm.

This new recycling process treats wastes, plastic mixtures and plastic composites. The mixed plastics and composites are separated by type, leaving other residual materials. The sorted plastic or plastic mixture undergoes wet treatment to clean the surfaces. An extractant removes soluble components of the plastics. Preferably the plastic mixture comprises polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene and polyurethane. The composites include metals and/or thermally-useful residues and one or more of the plastics above. Composites are separated before the wet treatment, into plastic components, residual materials and if appropriate, metallic components. The sorted plastics are dried after wet treatment. The plastic or plastic mixture is size reduced before wet treatment. Water is used in wet treatment; extraction employs a halogen- and aromatic-free substance, especially ethyl acetate. Any extractant residues left adhering to the plastic, are removed by water or heating. The plastic is extruded and granulated after extraction. Composite materials comprise packing, electronic scrap, aluminium composites, or scrap cable. Plastic mixture comprises hollow ware, sheets and other plastic objects.

Method of welding thermoplastic substrates with microwave frequencies

Microwave frequencies in the range of 0.5 GHz to 10 GHz are used to weld thermoplastic substrates by interposing a carrier strip. The strip is formed of a polymer carrier which is miscible in the substrates. Electrically conductive submicron carbon black susceptor particles are chosen with specified properties such that they generate enough heat within a specified time to produce a weld in which the heat generated is confined to the weld zone. The resulting weld is such that the welded assembly has essentially the same dimensions as the clamped assembly. Glass fiber reinforced substrates are welded without breaking glass fibers in the weld zone. Lap strength of welded substrates is greater than that of substrates joined by prior art methods, whether by welding or adhesive bonding. Articles microwave welded in accordance with the invention are useful for manufacturing and repairing vehicle components such as automobile bumpers and dashboards and other structural parts of automobiles, aircraft, and spacecraft.

The present invention provides new polymer induction bonding technology. Induction heating technologies are utilized to weld, forge, bond or set polymer materials. The invention provides controlled-temperature induction heating of polymeric materials by mixing ferromagnetic particles in the polymer to be heated. Temperature control is obtained by selecting ferromagnetic particles with a specific Curie temperature. The ferromagnetic particles (13,83) will heat up in an induction field, through hysteresis losses, until they reach their Curie temperature. At that point, heat generation through hysteresis loss ceases. This invention is applicable to bonding thermoplastic materials, wherein only the area to be heated has ferromagnetic particles in it; bonding of thermoset composites (17), which have been processed with a layer of thermoplastic material (19) on one side; curing of thermoset adhesives or composite resins; or consolidating thermoplastic composites.

Thereafter, the work piece becomes suspended between the laser light source and detector whereby an output of the detector now corresponds to a work piece measurement reading. Differences between the two readings reveal whether the work piece will yield a satisfactory weld at the specific position when later welded by a laser beam at the welding wavelength. Preferred work pieces include inkjet printhead lids and bodies.

The second contact surface of the second kind of synthetic resin and the first contact surface of the first kind of synthetic resin are melted by the heat of the laser beam. A plurality of projections and a plurality of recesses are formed on both the first contact surface of the first kind of synthetic resin and the second contact surface of the second kind of synthetic resin. A plurality of the projections of the first kind of synthetic resin engage with a plurality of the recesses of the second kind of synthetic resin. If fillers are provided, at least some of the will extend between the first and second synthetic resins. Accordingly, the second kind of synthetic resin is securely joined to the first kind of synthetic resin.

A package comprises a cooked meat product within the backseamed casing. The second layer of the casing film prevents or reduces necking down on the forming shoe during backseaming. The backseamed casing is especially useful for cook-in applications.

The inventive films have haze values of less than about 15%, a 2% secant modulus greater than about 50,000 psi and a cross directional shrinkage greater than 0%.
