Flattened cartons or containers stacked in a hopper of a packaging machine are successively removed from the hopper by an extractor including a vertically reciprocable suction-cup carrier engageable with the bottom section of the lowermost carton in the stack which initially is coplanar with an adjoining lateral section. The latter section, during the descent, comes to rest against a stationary ramp; the incipient erection of that lateral section by its engagement with the ramp is accelerated by a pair of swingable arms flanking the ramp, these arms being pivoted into a vertical position for area contact with the side of the passing carton. Possible malfunctions can be detected by a pressure sensor communicating with the suction line or by a photosensor in line with an area occupied by an end section of the carton in the unfolded position thereof.

The blank is operable into a pre-stiffened configuration wherein the given side panel is folded to position the stiffening panel to substantially overlap and be secured to the base of the box portion. When the folded side panel is pivoted about the line of weakness, a free end of the side panel is biased away from the secured stiffening panel and thereby separates from the stiffening panel along the line of weakness.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming containers. The containers may be cans, including composite cans. The apparatus may include a cylindrical mandrel and a blank may be formed into a cylindrical tube around the mandrel. Rotational apparatuses may engage portions of a blank that may be in a flat configuration and may rotate the portions around the outward cylindrical surface of the mandrel. Free edges of the tubular blank may be sealed by a sealing strip that may be T-shaped in cross section. A cup may be installed in an end opening, such as a bottom end, of the cylindrical tube. The cup may be sealed in the end opening by a seaming process using a seaming apparatus.

A container with a non-heat-seal window and a process for fabricating a low surface energy container with a non-heat-seal window. The process comprises forming a container template and cutting an opening in the container template. A window comprising a window stock material, a releasable liner, and a wiped on adhesive positioned between the window stock material and the releasable liner is sized to overlap the opening. A portion of the adhesive is exposed and the window is positioned over the opening.
