A device and a method for coating a printing material include a foil engaged with a printing material on an impression cylinder using guide rollers. The foil and the printing material are guided together in an engagement area and a functional layer, such as glue or varnish, is dried, i.e. activated or polymerized, through the foil in the engagement area using a drier. The guide rollers are disengaged from the impression cylinder to avoid contact between the foil and grippers of the impression cylinder. To improve a detachment behavior of the foil from the functional layer, an angle of detachment between the foil and the sheet is varied by pivoting the guide rollers about an external geometrical pivot axis or an internal geometrical pivot axis, or at least assisting the disengagement of the foil from the impression cylinder by a change of a pneumatic condition of a foil-guiding element.

If UV rays have ever been emitted so far by the LED units 2, each of which is formed of a plurality of LED chips 8, then a PLC 5 acquires, upon setting of a output set value by an operation unit 53, a correction value corresponding to a cumulative emission time up to a previous emission, from the correction table of the output set value. Thereafter, the PLC 5 sets the magnitude of the power supplied to each of the LED units 2 using the acquired correction value. If an output set value different from a previous output set value is set, the PLC 5 obtains the correction value starting from the cumulative emission time upon modification. As a result, the UV irradiation apparatus enables power consumption necessary for emission of UV rays to be reduced, and UV ray output to be kept constant regardless of the cumulative emission time, even if the output set value is modified.

A method for determining setting errors in a sheet-fed printing press includes recording a geometry of a printed sheet running through the printing press with an imaging system and comparing the recorded geometry with intended geometries for evaluation. An imaging system oriented substantially perpendicular to a sheet surface at least partly registers visible contours of sheet edges and conclusions are drawn, from measured deviations of the sheet edges in relation to intended contours, as to at least one of the following setting errors of the printing press: a faulty sheet transfer because of an incorrect setting of a gripper bar transporting the sheet, a lifting of the sheet off an impression cylinder because of an incorrect setting of blown air for sheet guidance, or an incorrect radius of the impression cylinder, for example because of incorrectly chosen underlays/cylinder covers.

Method of adjusting surface topography

Methods for adjusting the topography of a surface, such as for making a support surface substantially flat, e.g. for mitigating variations in a print gap, are described. The topography of the surface is first measured, and then a shim layer is printed to approximate the topography to a reference topography, the thickness of the layer being calculated using the measurements. For example the print gap comprising the distance between the surface of a printer table and printing means, such as a printhead. The print gap is first measured before at least one layer of ink is printed, using the printing means, at a selected position based on the measured print gap. The thickness of the layer of ink is selected to mitigate the variations in the print gap. In some embodiments, a substrate support surface may then be arranged over the printer table, so that the printed layer is disposed between the printer table and the substrate support surface. The apparatus can compensate for variations in the print gap due both to irregularities in the printer table surface and misalignment in mounting of the printing means. Also described is a printer table produced according to the methods described.

An oscillating assembly comprises first and second opposed gudgeons rotatably mounted on a shaft, the gudgeons being connected by either a plurality of rods or the roller. An oscillation mechanism comprises a reduction transmission assembly having differently toothed input and output pulleys. A cam groove in an oscillation cam is engaged by one or more oscillation pin(s) connected to the gudgeons. An input drive pulley turns with the gudgeons, and an output pulley turns with the oscillation cam. An intermediate double-pulley has second and third pulleys on a common hub. First and second timing belts connect, respectively, the input pulley to the second hub pulley, and the third hub pulley to the output pulley. A currently preferred step-down ratio between the input pulley and the output pulley is about 391:1.

A method for depositing wet printed sheets and forming a sheet stack in a delivery of a printing machine. An auxiliary stack which is separate from the sheet stack has sheet-shaped intermediate layers that are usable as moisture barriers in the sheet stack. A plurality of sheets are stacked on top of one another to form a first section of the sheet stack. Then an intermediate layer is moved from the auxiliary stack onto the section of the sheet stack. A plurality of sheets are stacked on top of one another and on the intermediate layer to form a further section. The intermediate layer is thus arranged in the sheet stack between the first section and the further section. The placement of the intermediate layers provides a way of reducing or even eliminating quality losses in sheets and/or sheet stacks caused by moisture and moisture exchange. 1.
