Systems, methods, software for monitoring usage of a recording medium in an image forming apparatus. In one embodiment, a usage monitor receives a raster image, and identifies thresholds that distinguish different intensity levels reproduced by different drop sizes of the recording material. The usage monitor identifies a set of pixel values for a block of pixels from the raster image, performs a vectorized comparison of the set of pixel values to each of the thresholds to generate sets of comparison bits, determines a number of set bits in each of the sets of comparison bits, and updates a threshold counter for each of the thresholds based on the number of set bits. The usage monitor may then compute drop counts for different drop sizes based on the threshold counter for each of the thresholds.

Syringe for filling print cartridge and establishing correct back pressure

The present invention relates to a syringe for replenishing a source of ink in a print cartridge. In a preferred embodiment, the end of the syringe valve is inserted into the end of the print cartridge valve to create a mechanical and liquid tight coupling between the two valves. Further insertion of the end of the syringe valve opens both valves to create an airtight fluid path between the syringe chamber and the depleted print cartridge ink bottle. Due to the negative pressure in the print cartridge ink bag, ink is drawn from the syringe chamber into the ink bag until the ink bag is substantially full and the pressure in the ink bag is at or near atmospheric pressure. An ink suction port is provided on the syringe to fill the space in the syringe chamber from which the ink has left. As soon as the print cartridge is replenished, the plunger in the syringe is manually pulled back a predetermined distance to draw the desired amount of ink from the print cartridge to create the desired negative pressure in the print cartridge. The syringe is then removed from the print cartridge and automatically pulls the two valves closed.

A bulge-ridge is positioned on the apex of the arch, which passes through the groove of the outer casing and has notches corresponding to different levels of reservoir filling with ink. EFFECT: simplified means of monitoring of ink consumption in the cartridge, and enhanced adaptability to their manufacture. 4 cl, 4 dwg ÐÎÑÑÈÉÑÊÀß ÔÅÄÅÐÀÖÈß (19) RU (11) 2 268 150 (13) C2 (51) ÌÏÊ B41J 2/175 (2006.01) ÔÅÄÅÐÀËÜÍÀß ÑËÓÆÁÀ ÏÎ ÈÍÒÅËËÅÊÒÓÀËÜÍÎÉ ÑÎÁÑÒÂÅÍÍÎÑÒÈ, ÏÀÒÅÍÒÀÌ È ÒÎÂÀÐÍÛÌ ÇÍÀÊÀÌ (12) ÎÏÈÑÀÍÈÅ ÈÇÎÁÐÅÒÅÍÈß Ê ÏÀÒÅÍÒÓ (21), (22) Çà âêà: 2002119277/12, 22.07.2002 (72) Àâòîð(û): ×åòâåðîâ Þðèé Ñòåïàíîâè÷ (RU), Ìàòâååâ  ÷åñëàâ Ìèõàéëîâè÷ (RU), Æóêîâ Àíäðåé Àëåêñàíäðîâè÷ (RU), Äæàíã Ìüþíã Ñîíã (KR) (24) Äàòà íà÷àëà äåéñòâè ïàòåíòà: 22.07.2002 (43) Äàòà ïóáëèêàöèè çà âêè: 20.06.2004 Àäðåñ äë ïåðåïèñêè: 117420, Ìîñêâà, óë.Ïðîôñîþçíà , 78, îôèñ 3302, ÑÒÀÐÔÈËÄ, ïàò.ïîâ.
