The system utilizes subtractive color printing techniques, but avoids the necessity for color masking and generally eliminates color correction as well. Following exposure of multiple negatives to develop color separations, corresponding printing plates are prepared and developed. A proofing sequence is optional between the development of the negatives and the plates. The ultimate printing is achieved by feeding stock into a duplicator which carries each of the three basic negative complementary colors, in sequence; a "black" printer can also be used for a higher degree of contrast and tone.

The top coat and ink stretch with the product so that the image remains intact. The process uses pad printing to print the image upon the surface of the product.

Methods of achieving precision registration in a roll to roll process for making patterned substrates by depositing first and second inks in a predetermined pattern, the predetermined pattern having fiducial marks and main pattern marks. One of these inks prints the fiducial marks onto a substrate while another ink prints main pattern marks on the same substrate such that the predetermined pattern bears a predictable spatial relationship to the pattern of fiducial marks. Consequently, even if the ink forming the predetermined pattern is invisible, or has such low contrast with the substrate that it is effectively invisible, or even has been dissolved away in a subsequent processing step, it is still possible to know where the predetermined pattern is by referring to the pattern of fiducial marks. The mechanism of obtaining the required printing ink capture while printing on the wet layer consists in formation and/or presence of the gel in the applied film of printing ink due to controlled physical-chemical mechanism of precipitation of the resin. This is achieved either as a result of controlled change in Hansen solubility parameter of the liquid in the printing ink due to evaporation of some or all of the nonreactive and volatile solvent, or alternatively as a result of the use of a polymer containing two different and separate segments, one of which is soluble in the monomer/oligomer mixture and the other of which is not. The insoluble segments form the reversible gel which I deliquated to form the liquid under the action of shear in the application process, which enables the application of liquid printing ink. Although overprinting with two or more identical patterns is within the scope of the invention good results are apparently obtained with a single overprinting at an angle of between 40 and 50 degrees, and more especially at 45 degrees to the first printing. In the described apparatus intaglio printing cylinders are used, the square image areas being preferably longitudinally and circumferentially aligned.

The present invention is directed to a method of printing ink upon a continuous substrate using a printing apparatus. First, the substrate is fed around a central impression cylinder which rotates so that the substrate successively passes through at least one face roll and a plurality of inking stations. When passing through each ink station, ink is heated to a predetermined temperature which is higher than the temperature of the central impression cylinder wherein the viscosity of the ink is dropped low enough so that the ink may be transferred to the substrate. Next, the ink at each inking station is applied to the substrate causing the temperature of the ink to drop and the viscosity to climb. This allows previous down inks to appear to be several times more viscous than the ink applied at the current inking station and to pull the ink off a printing plate in the direction of the substrate. Last, the inked substrate, which has passed through all inking stations, is cured at a curing station.
