The disclosed pressure sensitive record material is suitable for use in high temperature reprographic environments.

Disclosed is a color-developing composition for pressure-sensitive recording sheet material of the self-contained type comprising (A) 100 parts by weight of a copolymer obtained by reacting a p-alkylphenol having an alkyl moiety of from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and phenol with formaldehyde and (B) from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a hindered phenolic compound selected from phenols having an alkyl, alkylene or hydroxyl substituent radical in at least the 2- or 6-position, or both, of the benzene ring and derivatives thereof, the copolymer and the hindered phenolic compound being homogeneously dissolved in mutual solution. The hindered phenolic compound is either added to the starting materials for the preparation of the copolymer or, at the end of the copolymerization reaction, added to the resulting copolymer and dissolved homogeneously in mutual solution.

A color-forming composition which comprises a chromogenic dye and, as a color developer, an L-ascorbic acid 5,6-O-ketal or -acetal or an erythorbic acid 5,6-O-ketal or -acetal has good storage stability before color development. Images after color development are distinct and have high color density and good durability. The composition is useful as a color-forming composition in heat-sensitive or pressure-sensitive recording materials.

Abstract Process For The Production Of Record Material A colour developing material is produced by: a) gradually adding a metal silicate solution to a solution of an aluminium salt which is initially at a pH below 4 until the pH of the resulting mixture is approximately 4, thereby to induce some precipitation and to form a sol; b) gradually adding alkali to said sol to raise the pH to approximately 7, thereby to induce further precipitation and gel the sol or further gel the sol, said gelled sol being a hydrated silica/hydrated alumina composite: c) separating the gel from the aqueous medium and washing the resulting product to remove dissolved salts; and d) drying the washed product and reducing it in particle size. This colour developing material is then formulated into a coating composition, applied to a paper base and dried to produce a colour developing record material as used in pressure-sensitive (carbonless) copying paper sets.
