A method is provided for laminating a thermoplastic layer to at least a print area of a printed thermoplastic substrate (e.g. a polycarbonate substrate and laminate layer). A printed thermoplastic substrate comprises a print area on which an image (e.g. a portrait) is printed (e.g. by inkjet printing), the print area comprising a pattern of recessed cells separated by bridges. Each cell comprises recessed image receiving surfaces below a nominal surface of the print area for holding the ink of the printed image. The bridges have surface areas above the ink and the surface areas of the bridges comprising enough of the print area to provide lamination bonding areas. Using heat and pressure, a thermoplastic layer is laminated to at least the print area of the thermoplastic substrate to form lamination bonding between the thermoplastic layer and the lamination bonding areas provided by the surface areas of the bridges. 1. Techniques are described to embed graphical identifiers into a ghost image within a layer of laminate of an identification document. The ghost image includes optically variable media that has a first appearance when viewed from a front of the identification document in reflected light at a first angle and a second, different appearance when viewed from the front of the identification document in reflected light in a second, different angle. During the ghost image generation process, a graphical identifier can be placed on a baseline ghost image to generate an adjusted ghost image. Once the adjusted ghost image is printed onto the identification document, the graphical identifier can be viewable based on the appearance of the adjusted ghost identifier in relation to the reflected light.

The method involves heat transferring a metallized foil to a first surface of a plastic substrate, silk-screen printing over the metallized foil with ultraviolet curable ink, drying the ink with ultraviolet light and overlaminating the printed foil with a clear polyester film coated with a heat-activated adhesive or coating it with an ultraviolet curable varnish which is cured by applying ultraviolet light to the coating. The plastic substrate is in the form of a large sheet from which a plurality of cards are die cut after the printing and application of the transparent film. A magnetic tape is then applied to the back of each card.

The inventive process involves subjecting a transfer film in a continuous roll-to-roll process to the following operations: either forming microstructures on, or transferring microstructures to a surface of the transfer film; and then transferring the microstructures from the transfer film onto a surface of the final substrate. The microstructures are single or multi-layer structures that are made up of: voids in a substantially planar surface, the voids optionally filled or coated with another material; raised areas in a substantially planar surface; or combinations thereof.

The images were formed on the image receiving layer of a image recording body and includes a gradation information-containing image formed by means of a thermal sublimation transfer method and a character information-containing image formed by means of a thermal fusion transfer method. A trans parent protective layer is transferred from a protective forming thermal transfer sheet to the surface of image receiving layer so as to cover the whole area of the image receiving layer by a hot stamping means. The hot stamping means has a heating roll which has a contacting length longer than the width of said image receiving layer and a peripheral length longer than the length of said image receiving layer.
