FIELD: transportation, military equipment. SUBSTANCE: driving method for floating vehicle includes installation of casings on the outside of the vehicle, connected to its hull. Possibility of creation of opened hollows and delivery of exhaust gases to those hollows through exhaust valves and pipelines is provided. Exhaust gases charge from power train to hollows of casings and their release can be regulated with controlled intake and exhaust valves respectively. Initial positive pressures are set in hollows of casings which provide stable vehicle position on calm water. In case of vehicle straight movement and absence of rocking, exhaust gases charging into casings hollows is performed in a smooth manner. In case of straight movement and rocking, tilting motion range is measured and proportionally to it's value exhaust gases supply to hollows from tilt side and opposite side respectively is increased or reduced. In case of turning the exhaust gases supply to hollows from turning side is ceased and from opposite side is increased proportionally to vehicle velocity squared and inversely proportional to the radius of turning. The chains are driven by friction wheels 12 from at least one I.C. engine (14), Fig. 2 (not shown). The speed of each chain can be varied. Each buoyant member has lugs 7, so that it can be joined to the adjacent member by hinge pins, rollers 9, and resilient lateral rollers 10. The hull, buoyant members, and tracks can be made from glass-reinforced plastics. The shape of each member 6 ensures that it remains stationary with respect to the water over which it travels. The rollers 9, 10 can be replaced by PTFE or nylon blocks, which can run in PTFE guides. The chains can run freely within the tracks, with the craft driven by sails, oars, or punt poles. The links can be omitted with each member pushing directly on the next.

The strake at least in part has a pair of surfaces (19, 20, Fig 5 and 23, 24, Fig 6) which both extend downwardly from the hull at an angle of between 75 degrees and 90 degrees to the horizontal when the hull is level. Each of the surfaces when immersed in water is capable of giving rise to a lateral force on the hull during turning of the hull in water. The forward end of each strake may be triangular in cross-section to allow turning in a displacement mode, while each rearward end may be quadrilateral in cross-section to resist turning in both a displacement and a planing mode. A section of each strake may be formed integrally with the hull, with another section formed separately, then affixed to the hull. The strakes may extend over removable panels 7, 17 in the hull underside, but do not extend below the bottom of a keel 16.

The AFIFD has a membrane structure having a seal function and a plate structure having protection power, which are organically combined with each other, to provide both a seal function and protection power. The AFIFD is provided with air while being unfolded by the operation of driving means when the amphibious vehicle swims in water, so that the membrane structure and the plate structure are unfolded to form a completely sealed floating space. When the amphibious vehicle does not swim in water, the structures are folded and closed fixed to a vehicle body, so that the amphibious vehicle can run on ground without any difficulty.

To reduce hydrodynamic drag and improve marine handling, covers 34 are provided which cover the gaps when the wheels are retracted. These covers may be hinged parallel to a longitudinal, or to a transverse, axis of the vehicle. The covers may be hung from suspension arms 40 or otherwise connected to hull 6. The covers may leave gaps (90,fig 4); to cover these, a second embodiment comprises "barn door" double covers (92, 94, fig. 5). A third embodiment has a mechanical linkage (182, fig. 7), which biases cover 180 to overlay gap 90 on wheel retraction. Each of the units connected to the track by the chain is made of a buoyancy chain having a buoyancy to allow a car body to float on the water surface. The present invention is able to provide a transportation means exclusively for mud flat just by installing the caterpillar on the wheel shafts by replacing the wheels of the car, to reduce costs for manufacture and installation, and to easily use the caterpillar amphibiously by buoyancy.

The present invention provides, with reference to Figure 1, an amphibian operable on land and in/on water. The amphibian comprises a planing hull, at least one retractable wheel, the at least one retractable wheel being retractable from a protracted land engaging position when the amphibian is operated on land to a retracted position when the amphibian is operated in/on water, at least one prime mover for providing power to drive, directly or indirectly, the amphibian on land and/or in/on water, and at least one steerable wheel which is, at least when the amphibian is operated on land, connected directly or indirectly to a steering control device operable by a driver to steer the amphibian. In addition the present invention provides that either i) the steering control device is moveable between at least two distinct laterally spaced positions across the width or beam of the amphibian; ii) the amphibian comprises side-by-side seating; iii) the amphibian comprises a roll over protection system; iv) the amphibian comprises an open cargo area cargo or truck-like bed; v) the amphibian comprises two seat belts and three seat belt buckles or buckle positions, or two seat belt buckles or buckle positions, and three seat belts; vi) the amphibian comprises a footwell area having no transmission tunnel; vii) the amphibian comprises a footwell and seating area configured so as not to impede or restrict driver and/or passenger entry via one side of the amphibian, egress from the other side of the amphibian, and through movement therebetween; viii) the amphibian comprises a positive buoyancy system and/or deployable righting system; or ix) the amphibian comprises an interlock or safety system which prevents operation/activation of at least one driver or automatically controlled parameter of the amphibian unless sensing/determining a first condition has been satisfied.

An amphibious vehicle having inflatable pontoons disposed in recesses formed in the vehicle body. The inflatable pontoons retract into the recesses when deflated to reduce the overall width of the vehicle to below the maximum allowable width for a road vehicle. The inflatable pontoons extend when inflated to beyond the maximum allowable width for road vehicles, thereby improving the stability of the vehicle when it is operated in water. The inside surfaces of the recesses provide support for transferring the uplift force generated by the pontoons to the vehicle body when in water. An elastic member may be used to retract the deflated pontoons into the recess. Decorative doors covering the recesses are forced open by the inflating pontoons to a position above the water line.

The flaps are fitted with elastic hinges and are raised and lowered by pneumatic/hydraulic rams. They enclose folded buoyancy bags (5) and to increase the buoyancy of the vehicle, the flaps are swung into a horizontal position and the bags inflated. To fold the bags, the flaps are simply compressed with the rams. The system operates fully automatically and protects the bags in the folded position.
