Systems and methods that utilize both UVA and UVC lamps to clean and disinfect a cabin filter of a vehicle, thereby preventing the cabin filter from becoming fouled for an extended period of time. By performing both gas filtration and cabin filter disinfection functions, these systems and methods mitigate: (1) the pressure drop (or flow reduction) experienced; (2) the smell breakthrough when the gas adsorbent becomes saturated; and (3) the presence of microbial growth. This is accomplished by the sequential application of UVC and UVA radiation to the cabin filter, with the UVC radiation being applied for a period of time upon vehicle startup to neutralize bacteria and fungus present in the cabin filter and the UVA radiation subsequently being applied continuously to filter the gas flowing through the cabin filter. A photocatalyst may be added to the cabin filter itself to enhance disinfection and gas filtration. 1. A cabin filter cleaning system for a vehicle , comprising:a filter box adapted to be fluidly coupled to an air inlet and an air outlet and contain a cabin filter;an ultraviolet-C (UVC) lamp coupled to or disposed within or adjacent to the filter box and adapted to deliver UVC radiation to an interior portion of the filter box and the cabin filter, thereby disinfecting the cabin filter; andan ultraviolet-A (UVA) lamp coupled to or disposed within or adjacent to the filter box and adapted to deliver UVA radiation to the interior portion of the filter box and the cabin filter, thereby gas filtering an air flow through the cabin filter.2. An apparatus is provided for regenerating an odor absorbent in a motor vehicle HVAC system. That apparatus includes a regeneration blower assembly that is connected between a heater plenum and a fresh air inlet duct of the HVAC system. An apparatus and a system is provided that may be utilized to determine oil migration and oil displacement from a pre-oiled air filter. The present invention may also be utilized to determine if oil is displaced from the air filter onto a portion of the apparatus for visualization to a user. The present invention utilizes a demonstration apparatus having a system for forcing air through the oil subjected air filter thereby attempting to force displacement of the oil from the air filter. The apparatus utilizes a blowing means whereby the oil infused air filter is subject to higher than normal air flow and whereby the apparatus has a deflection portion whereby if oil is displaced from the air filter, it is deflected onto the deflection portion where it would be physically viewable to an observer present in the vicinity of the apparatus.

The air filtration system of claim 1 , wherein the filter bed comprises activated carbon claim 1 , zeolites claim 1 , alumina claim 1 , molecular sieves claim 1 , cellulosic materials claim 1 , titanium dioxide claim 1 , calcium carbonate claim 1 , inorganic salts claim 1 , or combinations thereof.3. The air filtration system of claim 1 , wherein the heater is an electrically resistive coil claim 1 , a sleeve covering a portion of the filter bed claim 1 , or a plurality of electrodes that pass a current to the filter bed.4. A filter device and technique are described which rely on absorption rather than adsorption for the removal of gas phase contaminants. A filter media (49) is composed of wicking fibers which are impregnated with any of a variety of liquid phase absorbing systems made from the combination of a carrier liquid and soluble complexing/degrading agent or agents. The wicking fibers may be connected to an external reservoir (37) which can be used to supply fresh absorbing fluid to the filter media giving them a potentially inexhaustible capacity. The filter media may be made from any of a variety of fibers which can rapidly transport a liquid phase by the nature of either their geometry or their chemical composition. Geometries may include multilobal cross-sectional configurations, porous hollow fibers, porous or striated fibers or tightly bundled microfibers, all of which exhibit the property of wicking fluid from an external source.

To regenerate this drying layer, secondary air is sucked through a valve without first passing the adsorptive layers and is electrically heated to aid drying before being extracted by a reversible fan which normally forces incoming air through the filter. Cooler air can be entrained during regeneration to prevent the fan overheating. The entire unit may have an initial dust-removing layer, e.g. felt. Electric vehicles, which do not have a sufficient waste heat source inside, suffer from a problem wherein mileage is shortened if power from a battery is used for antifogging of windows and heating the interior of the vehicle. To solve this problem, a desiccant humidity control technique is used. During running of an electric vehicle, moisture emitted from passengers is absorbed, so as to suppress rising of an absolute humidity, by a desiccant (2) which absorbs moisture in air or discharges moisture into air by the difference in relative humidity to air, and air with a high temperature is generated by utilization of heat generated by moisture absorption. This air is sprayed to a front window and other areas so as to cause defogging as well as heat the interior of the vehicle. Further, during stopping, an electric heater (3) and a fan (4) are driven by commercial power so as to generate air with a high temperature and a low relative humidity and to regenerate the desiccant (2). In this way, since the desiccant (2) is regenerated during stopping, the configuration of the desiccant is not restricted, and a device to switch a passing-air flow passage is simplified. As a result, the antifogging air conditioning system can be made compact and can reduce the use of electricity in electric vehicles during running, whereby mileage can be prolonged, and the required capacity of the battery can be reduced.

Filter blockage detector comprises a high-tension (HT) source of electricity (33) emitting an electrical discharge to which the filter is subjected, and measuring the current after the filter that is related to the degree of blockage by particles carried in the air passing through it, using a tension (34) or current detector. This invention relates to methods and devices for removing harmful impurities from the air and its conditioning in relatively hermetic areas, mainly in passenger compartments of a means of transport. However they can be also used in other relatively hermetic areas. The method for air cleaning consists in that the air fed by the fans from a relatively hermetic area is cleaned alternately in two streams to remove humidity and organic harmful impurities with the aid of adsorption filters, chemisorbed compounds and catalyst poisons with the help of low-temperature catalytic filter, depending on a quantity and quality of harmful impurities contained in the air of the area. Alternate regeneration of the adsorption filter inoperative at the moment is carried out in one of the air streams with the aid of humidity adsorbed on silica gel of the said filter, by heating this adsorption filter to 160° C, with each of the adsorption filters comprising a double layer of silica gel-activated carbon sorbent. Then cooling of the adsorption filter is performed with the aid of the fan, maintaining the balance between the air volume fed to a relatively hermetic area from the atmosphere and the air volume discharged into the atmosphere during regeneration.
