An electrochemical cell battery is disclosed having current collecting terminals acting as security device. The battery includes a plurality of electrochemical cells connected in series or parallel. Each electrochemical cell has a current collecting terminal connecting the positive current collectors together and a current collecting terminal connecting the negative current collectors together. The current collecting terminals each have a folded extension arm for electrically connecting two adjacent electrochemical cells together. The folded extension arms have a shape memory characteristic and are electrically connected together via a welding metal having a fusion temperature T f of less than 180° C. whereby if a temperature of an electrochemical cells rises above the fusion temperature T f of the welding metal, the welded connection melts and the folded extension arms of the current collecting terminals spring back to their initial shape thereby severing the electrical connection between the electrochemical cells.

A pair of connecting terminals of the forced connection device are arranged to be pressed against each other with an insulating member disposed therebetween. The forced connection device includes a gas generator for generating combustion gas directed to the insulating member. When an abnormality is detected, the forced connection device short-circuits the connecting terminals with each other through activation of the gas generator. The second capacitor and the discharge device are provided integrally.

The inverter includes switching elements. The switching elements have a characteristic that the withstand voltage of the switching elements decreases as the temperature of the inverter decreases. The ECU sets the stepped-up voltage, based on a temperature characteristic of the power storage device and a temperature characteristic of the inverter, so that the stepped-up voltage is increased within a range in which the stepped-up voltage does not exceed the withstand voltage. In this way, at low temperatures, deterioration of the power performance can be suppressed while the switching elements are protected.
