Embodiments of the invention comprise a multi-input range box driven by multiple electric drives. Range shifting involves momentarily increasing the current through all but a given motor, to a level that will carry the entire load, comprising specified constant power. Simultaneously, torque of the given motor is reduced to zero. The given motor is then disconnected from supplying power, is synchronized to the input speed of the new speed range, and is then engaged for the new range. The above sequence is then repeated for each remaining motors, in turn. The motor current is re-equalized for all of the motors, after all the motors have been connected to provide power at the new range. Thus, there is no interruption in power flow during a range shift, and the motors are always used to deliver power, rather than to serve as a brake.

A multi-port reconfigurable battery has at least one bank of statically joined series connected battery cells, each including a positive and negative pole connected through switches to respective output connections on at least one port. Processor controlled switches reconfigure the cells to provide power for electrical loads on one or more ports and simultaneously provide charging on one or more other ports. An alternative configuration divides groups of series connected cells into separate battery banks that permit other configurations. Ports are configurable to share one electrically common connection with other ports providing a simplified configuration (multi-tap reconfigurable battery). Applications include selectable motor speed control and battery regeneration schemes matched to motor output, and single or multiphase AC power output at selectable frequencies for use as an Uninterruptible Power Supply. The battery is also described as a power source for a forced-air induction system (e.g. electric supercharger) for a combustion engine.

An electric vehicle includes a power receiving connector that is connected to a battery via a relay, and an electric charger includes a power supply connector that is connected to the power receiving connector. When a high voltage is applied to the power receiving connector due to a weld failure of the relay, a warning lamp flashes to notify an operator of the risk. Then the connection state is detected between the connectors. When the connectors are not connected to each other, a warning buzzer issues a warning sound. When the connectors are connected to each other, the warning buzzer is turned off. The power receiving connector is covered by the power supply connector in this manner, the operator is unlikely come in contact with the power receiving connector, and thus the output of a warning sound from the warning buzzer is stopped.

Since the heat generated in the electric discharge device is cooled by a cooling device while the energy stored in the energy storage is discharged to the electric discharge device, the heat dissipation capacity of the electric discharge device is increased to shorten the discharge time. Also, the operation period of the cooling device is controlled in proportion to the residual voltage of the energy storage, and thus the cooling efficiency is maximized.

Accordingly, discharging of the auxiliary battery in a starting-off state is prevented, which makes it possible to stably operate the electric vehicle system.

An electric vehicle is proposed which comprises a reversible power supply (or which is coupled with a reversible power supply), one or more electric motors that are connected to wheels via a mechanical transmission (or without such transmission), one or several reversible converters, which make it possible to control the speed and/or torque of the aforesaid electric motors in all four quadrants of electromechanical characteristic, a high capacity capacitor (supercapacitor) and a ballast resistor. The vehicle is provided with a reversible dc step-up/step-down transformer, two current sensors, two voltage sensors, a vehicle speed sensor, a speed sensor for one of the electric motors and a control system, wherein one or several reversible converters are connected directly to the terminals of the reversible power supply. The supercapacitor is connected to the terminals via the reversible transformer. The ballast resistor, parallel-connected to a bypass diode, is connected in series with a discharge key to the same terminals. One sensor indicates the current value and direction of the reversible power supply, the second sensor takes measurements of coil (inductance choke) current being a component of the transformer. One voltage sensor measures the voltage at the capacitor terminals. The outputs of the aforesaid sensors, together with the output of the speed sensor, are connected to the inputs of the control system, the outputs of which are connected to the control inputs of the transformer and a discharge key. The technical result is a reduction in energy loss as a result of the increased use of recovered energy.

The securement of the battery (30) to the motor 6 also automatically and simultaneously aligns and connects terminals of the battery (30) to power receiving terminals of the motor (16). Such a quick and simply securement mechanism provides a battery (30) can be quickly and easily removed, for example, in order to be charged. Accordingly, the drive unit/caravan mover (10) (including the motor, roller, battery, control unit and mounting means) forms a single self-supporting component which is solely secured to the caravan/trailer at a single location by the mounting means.

The controller calculates a full charge capacity of the electrical storage device on the basis of a state of charge of the electrical storage device at the time when external charging is started, a state of charge of the electrical storage device at the time when the external charging is completed, and an accumulated value of a current value during the period when the external charging is being carried out, and sets a polarization elimination time. When a stopped time during the period when charging or discharging of the electrical storage device is stopped is longer than the polarization elimination time, the controller regards a voltage value of the electrical storage device at the time of at least one of the start of the external charging or the completion of the external charging as an open circuit voltage of the electrical storage device. The controller calculates a state of charge corresponding to the voltage value as a state of charge that is used to calculate the full charge capacity by using a correlation between the open circuit voltage and the state of charge. The controller shortens the polarization elimination time as a rate of change increases. The rate of change indicates a ratio of a variation in the open circuit voltage to a variation in the state of charge.
