Themast is allowed to incline momentarily when the sail experiences an excessive wind pressure, without losing its stability, and support consists of two tubes of equal length joined to each other at the end where they support the mast, the other ends being attached to the outer hulls by a boom sliding in a fixed rail. Two fibre glass shafts of equal length are attached at one end to the mast and at the other end to the same rails which hold the tubes. Control of the mast is effected manually by two pulleys attached to the foot of the mast and to the ends of the forward boom joining the two hulls. Sliding between the forward boom and the arms is facilitated by a strip of Teflon (RTM).

The sail (22, 22a, 22b) is narrower in the middle than at the edges and has upper and lower boltropes (48, 49) that are guided in grooves (27) to the yards (5-9). Erecting and reefing of the sail (22, 22a, 22b) and bracing can be accomplished by remote control. Because of the high speed that can be attained, energy recovery is possible with a propeller.

The sailing boat with a catamaran hull has a single mast which can be moved from one hull to the other, complete with all the rigging and sails. This permits an increased sail area to be used, as the sails are altered in this way to suit the direction of the wind, giving greater stability. The stays which support the rigging from a pentagon and adjust themselves accordingly to the tack. The whole system can be transferred simultaneously single handed. Rigging weights can be positioned quickly, and the dew of the jib does not alter for any tack. The system enables the size of the vessel to be reduced. The sails do not need to be reduced immediately the wind changes.

This highly engineered recreational catamaran features a unique pivotable mast with a downward extending section that holds an underwater ballast. A hang glider type sail provides lift as well as thrust. Working in combination with the underwater ballast, the sail functions to deliver a high performance sailboat with high stability and ease of control. A sailing device comprising a hull structure (1), a fin structure (2) and a sail system (3). The sail system (3) is arranged to be trimmed with its foot portion (4) to leeward of its upper portion (5) and for generating a wind resultant force including an upward lift component. The fin structure (2) is adapted for generating a lift having a downward component. During sailing in stronger winds, the downward component of the lift generated by the fin structure opposes the upward lift component of the wind resultant force, enabling to carry sails generating an upward lift component larger than the gravity forces exerted onto the device, without the device being lifted out of the water. Thus a substantially improved driving force to water displacement ratio can be achieved, so in principle higher speeds can be achieved than with known sailing device.
