A multi-roll automatic tape splicing device includes a platen which is rotatablymounted on a support frame via a shaft. Two or more tape mandrels are rotatably disposed on the platen at a substantially equal distance from the shaft, and substantially equally spaced from each other, each mandrel being capable of receiving a respective roll of tape. An index drive is operatively coupled to the platen, for selectively rotating the platen so as to successively move each mandrel into a predetermined operating position at which a web of tape can be drawn from a respective roll of tape disposed on the mandrel, and for moving a mandrel out of the operating position when the respective roll of tape is depleted. A first sensor is operatively mounted on the support frame and capable of detecting a depleted condition of a roll of tape mounted on a respective mandrel in the operating position. A second sensor is operatively mounted on the support frame and capable of detecting rotation of a mandrel in the operating position. A cutting unit is disposed on the frame and capable of severing a web of tape being drawn from a depleted roll of tape. A control unit is responsive to the first and second sensors such that when the first sensor detects a depleted condition of a roll of tape, the control unit controls the index drive to rotate the platen and thereby move the next successive mandrel into the operation position. A tab formed on the end of a fresh roll of tape mounted on the successive mandrel adheres to the web of tape being drawn from the depleted roll, thereby causing a web of tape to be drawn from the fresh roll. Thereafter, the control unit controls the cutting unit to cut the web of tape being drawn from the depleted roll, when the second sensor detects rotation of the mandrel in the operation position.

The paper is supplied from a pair of rolls and when one roll is exhausted, the other one is substituted. A movable splicer assembly is disposed adjacent a paper supply roll and which includes an idler roll, a paper stop device, a severing device and a splice sealing roll. Continuous web feed is provided by using an apparatus for unwinding a web on a continuous basis by means of an automatic web splicing apparatus. An arm supporting a web roll is rocked when unwinding of the web is switched between web rolls. When the web is switched from one of web rolls (roll A) to the other (roll B), the remaining core of the web roll is removed subsequent to switching. Then the web roll installation position is shifted to the side reverse to the front and back of the web being unwound from the other web roll (roll B). After that, a new web roll is mounted in position. When the web is switched from the other web roll (roll B) to the web roll (roll A), the remaining core of the web roll is removed subsequent to switching. A web (13) of paper is fed through a printing press 10, 11, 12 and an adhesive tape (14) is fed into the press at a predetermined position across the width of the web through a tape guide (31, 32) and diverter bar (17) from a first tape supply reel (33) rotatably supported in a ready position on a reel support. A second tape supply reel 50 is attached to the reel support in a stand-by position for splicing of the second tape to the first tape in the exhausting of the latter. The second tape is threaded from the second supply reel over a pin (42) to prevent the second tape from fouling the surface of the first reel. A method and apparatus for continuously supplying thermoplastic webbing to an application apparatus is disclosed. In one aspect of the invention, first (22) and second (14) webs of thermoplastic material are held stationary and heat spliced together upstream in a line operation while a downstream segment of the thermoplastic webbing is continuously supplied to an application apparatus downstream in the operation. The heat splicing step is carried out by bringing together first and second opposable splicer clamps (58, 60) to form an overlapping area between the first and second webs and applying a heat impulse to the overlapping area to bond the webs together.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A control system for a web-feeding machine used to provide a continuous supply of material having successive labels and registration marks printed serially thereon is disclosed. The machine has an assembly for splicing the material from a ready web and the material severed from a running web wherein the response of the assembly after being actuated is delayed by a response time T. The control system comprises a driving circuit having an input and an output electro-mechanically coupled to the splicing assembly actuated thereby in response to a signal applied to the input thereof, a scanner positioned adjacent the material to provide a signal in response to the presence of a registration mark, and an encoder for providing a fixed number of pulses proportional to a corresponding length of the moving material. The control system also comprises a control circuit connected to the scanner, the encoder and the input of the driving circuit. The control circuit counts the number of encoder pulses between successive scanner signals and then decrements from that number to zero and, responsive to a scanner signal, provides a time delay To preset to approximate the response time T and decrements to zero from a preset number D after the time delay To has expired. The control circuit also provides a splice signal SS and supplies a splice-command signal SC to the input of the driving circuit in response to the splice signal SS. The machine accomplishes a splice-in-register after the splice-command signal SC has been applied thereto.

The apparatus includes: two suction pads spaced by a predetermined distance at each of upper and lower portions of the tape exchange unit to fix the tape; a pair of upper and lower joint tape suction blocks having a surface to which joint tape for connecting the cut tape between the two suction pads at upper and lower portions is attached; and a tape cutter for cutting the tape fixed by the suction pads. According to the present invention, the apparatus and method for continuously supplying the tape can smoothly supply the tape, shorten tape replacement time, and reduce errors in tape joints when the tape on the tape feeding unit is replaced.

In apparatus for joining a web of material 3 from a new roll 3a to the web 2 from an exhausted roll 2a, or for joining a web 2 from a new roll 2a to the web 3 from an exhausted roll 3a, joining is effected by adhesive 35 on the leading end of the new web and by the pressure of rollers 13, 14 carried by levers 11, 12, and the end of the old web is severed by a cutter blade 21 coacting with one of two notched blocks 15, 16 carried by the levers 11, 12, a support 20 for the blade 21 being adjustable through 180 degrees so that the blade co-operates with the block 15 or 16 associated with the expiring web. Each web passes over a guide roller 4, around a tensioning roller 5 carried by a pivotal arm 7, and around another guide roller 6. The running web i.e. the web 2 as shown, passes by the blade 21 and between the rollers 13, 14 to feed rollers 9, 10. The leading end of the new web 3 is positionep with the adhesive part 35 between the rollers 13, 14 and is held in this position by a finger on a pivoted member 30 engaging a notch 29a in a fixed block 29. The two levers 11, 12, which are pivoted about the shafts of the rollers 9, 10, are coupled by gear-wheels 9b, 10b, so that they can move simultaneously but in opposite directions. A spring 19 biases the levers 11, 12 towards the position in which the rollers 13, 14 are in contact and one or other of the blocks 15, 16 engages the blade 21. Normally the levers 11, 12 are held in the position shown by a pivoted member 18 engaged by a stop 11a on the lever 11. An apparatus is disclosed for attaching a running web which is withdrawn from a first source of supply to the leader of a fresh web which is stored in a second source of supply through the use of double sticky back adhesive strips. The apparatus comprises a supply frame provided with a conveyor assembly to transport a roll of material along the supply frame and a splicing head assembly mounted to the roll frame. The splicing head assembly has a plurality of idle rollers, a vacuum member adapted to hold the leading end of the fresh web and a cutting and clamping mechanism moveably mounted to the frame of the splicing head assembly. The cutting and clamping mechanism is adapted to be pivoted by a pneumatic cylinder to clamp the trailing web end from the expiring roll to the fresh web under tension and sever the web from the expiring roll between the dispensing roll and the location where the webs are clamped. A spring biased web acceleration arm mounted to the supply frame engages the web of the fresh roll to provide a reservoir of slackened web from the fresh roll allowing the splice joint of the two webs to be pulled away with gradually increasing force thus preventing sudden acceleration force on the splice.

Abstract of the Disclosure An improved splicing apparatus has a splicer head comprising a pair of opposed upper and lower traveling carriages each of which supports an idler roller, a nip bar which is swingable on its carriage between a ready position downstream from its corresponding idler roller and a web preparation position at the front of the splicer head and means for pushing the nip bar towards the opposite nip bar when both carriages are in their advanced positions. A knife carriage located on the head between the two nip bar carriages retracts when either nip bar carriage retracts to permit the nip bar on the opposite carriage to be swung to its web preparation position. The knife carriage supports a knife which can be actuated momentarily to urge it from a normal retracted position to an advanced position wherein it intercepts one of the nip bars when that nip bar is in its splicing position against the opposite nip bar. The present splicer facilitates preparation of a ready web in a quick convenient and safe manner and it also produces splices between webs having little or no tails in a reliable and efficient manner.

The present invention also proposes that the cartridges (40,41,42) may have printing cylinders (43,44,45,46) of different sizes, and furthermore that a mobile unwind stand may be used to move web material to the printing apparatus, and the web output from the printing apparatus processed by sheet folding techniques.

The input festoon includes a dancer roll which is movable along a track to allow storage of a ready web as the ready web is pre-accelerated by an accelerator roll to a running speed prior to creation of a splice at a splice head. Tail grab sensors are mounted on the apparatus above the web between the input roll and the splice head adjacent the input roll. The tail grab sensor detects tears or breaks in the web and provides an electrical signal to initiate a splice. A vacuum box including a pivotable vacuum bar is provided for creating a high speed butt splice. A method of creating a high speed butt splice using the vacuum box is also presented.

A device for continuously feeding a band or strip, esp a hot-sealing plastics strip from a reel to a machine, comprises two reels, operating alternately to supply the bands; the band leaving the operational reel passes over a tensioning device to the receiving machine; a jointing device is incorporated on the path of the band from the feed reels to the tensioning device. Pref, each reel is supported on a pair of rollers sufficiently far apart to prevent the reel tipping out under the pull of the band but sufficiently near together to prevent the empty reel core from falling between the rollers. These supporting rollers are pref longer than the thickness of the reels and are freely supported at both ends. The tensioning device is pref so constructed that it normally supplies sufficient tension to take up the slack and regulate the feed of the band, but permits some of this slack to be released to the consuming machine while the band is temporarily arrested on the upstream side of the tensioning device, by the jointing device.

The apparatus includes a support stand having means for supporting the first and second rolls of paper in rotatable relationship therewith; a festooner arrangement carried by the support stand for establishing an elongated path of travel for paper of the second roll moving through the apparatus and for allowing the utilizing device to feed upon the paper carried by the festooner when the second roll of paper has stopped rotating; and clamping, severing and splicing means responsive to the halt of the second roll of paper for clamping the paper of said second roll at a first predetermined location, severing the paper of said second roll at a second predetermined location, below the first predetermined location, and for joining the beginning of said first roll to the severed end of said second roll; whereby the utilizing device will begin feeding on the paper of the first roll of paper. In addition, there is disclosed preparing apparatus operatively positioned on the support stand for treating the beginning end of the first roll of paper such that it may be subsequently joined to the trailing end of the second roll of paper.
