A web-fed printing press has a plurality of printing-couple cartridges through which the web passes seriatim, at least one of the cartridges having printing cylinders of a different size to at least one other cartridge, and the cartridges being selectively trippable into or out of printing engagement with the web passing therethrough. It is stated that a rapid change of printing format can be acheived thereby by changing the selection of which cartridge is to be in printing engagement with the web. SPLICING PAPER WEBS.

In an arrangement for splicing the start of a new roll of web-stock to the end of an old roll, both rolls are supported with their rotation axes horizontal on respective identical mobile reelstands or trollies which can be moved freely to and from the splicer, but which are accurately positioned (both mutually and with respect to the splicer) during splicing by a rail system associated with the splicer. As described, the top surfaces of a first pair of rails (37) (one each side of the trolley) are engaged by lateral projections (35) on the trolley, the said rail surfaces being configured to raise the trolley from at least some of its wheels as it is progressed towards the splicing station, whereby to ensure that the reel rotation axis is in correct horizontal alignment. Lateral alignment of the trolley is ensured by another pair of rails (32) between which the trolley passes, the trolley having spherical contact rollers (30, 31) for engagement therewith. ...

A web which passes through printing, cutting and folding stations is cut in synchronism with the printer, but folding operation subsequent cutting are synchronised with the arrival of cut sheets at the folder. In one form a longitudinal fold (which may be facilitated by a prior longitudinal perforation) may be formed before the cutting station. Transverse perforations for facilitating transverse folds may also be formed in synchronism with the printer before the severance of the web. ...
