The sheet conveying force when contacting the leading edge of the sheet against the skew feed correction member is smaller than sheet conveying force of the discharging roller pair when discharging the sheet onto the stacking portion.

In a sheet material processing device, in particular a device for stacking sheet material, such as banknotes, transported sheet material is decelerated by braking at a time when the sheet material is not completely decelerated, only on a rearward in the transport direction of the sheet material. Due to the inertial forces acting in the sheet material during the braking process, this leads to an autonomous stretching of the sheet material, whereby a folding and wrinkling of the sheet material during braking is compensated for or completely avoided.

In a case where a sheet detection portion 510c detects that the height position of the uppermost sheet is above a second height position, the control portion (636 fig. 9) sets a sheet discharge speed of the discharging portion 130 to a first sheet discharge speed. In a case where the sheet detection portion 510c detects that the height position of the uppermost sheet becomes lower than the second height position, the control portion (636 fig. 9) controls the sheet discharge speed to be a second sheet discharge speed faster than the first sheet discharge speed. This avoids a sheet being discharged buckling as it contacts the sheet stacking portion and causing a jam.

A nip mechanism for a substrate transfer system allows the nip mechanism to be actuated such as opened and/or closed by the drive motor for the nip mechanism. As a result, the need to operate the nip mechanism pneumatically, for example, can be avoided. Essentially, the drive motor now performs a dual role, i.e., both driving the nip rollers and also opening and closing the nip mechanism. The nip mechanism comprises a roller separation mechanism and a one-way clutch for engaging the roller separation mechanism when the drive motor is driven in the second direction. In the present implementation, this roller separation mechanism comprises a cam that pushes the first nip roller and the second nip roller away from each other. A cam limiter can be used to prevent over-rotation of this cam.

A drive roll/idler roll nip release mechanism utilizes the motor used for the drive nip, coupled with one-way clutches, to power the nip release as a sheet is handed off to a downstream nip. A drive shaft is coupled to a first one-way clutch in one direction and an idler cam shaft is coupled to a second one-way clutch in the opposite direction. This allows the idler cam shaft to be driven only when the motor is reversed, and the drive shaft to be driven only when the motor is moving forward. The one-way clutch on the drive shaft allows the drive wheels to freewheel when the motor is reversed in order to engage the nip release. Thus, the nip release is activated while the drive nip continues to rotate in the direction of sheet motion.

Before a rear end of the sheet passes the pair of conveying rollers, the pair of conveying rollers is moved to the nip release position by the roller moving unit, and then, the guide moving unit makes each of the pair of regulating guides reach the guide position from the retracting position.
