Certain theoretical speed value levels are assigned to differences between actual gaps and desired gaps. Since the curve forms can be selected, it is possible to take drive ratios into account. In order to reach the desired gap at a speed v0 at the point where the packages are transferred to the conveyor belts, the theoretical speed level curves of the drive mechanism are assigned to real gaps on the basis of prior measurements. Non-linearities of the transfer function of the drive are detected by measurement-based tabular allocation of speed levels.

Additional guide rollers (11) push the paper sheets against disks (2) adjacent to the direction changing rollers. A guide sheet (4) adjacent to the paper stack pulls the sheets of paper out of the pockets, allowing them to be deposited on the stack.

A sheet passes beneath a roller which is mounted on a lever so that the opposite end of the lever is deflected by an amount proportional to the thickness of the sheet. A method for franking mail items fed to a franking machine. The mail items are drawn from the underside of a stack for separation or are fed individually on a conveying section upstream of the franking machine to a printing unit for franking, after franking, are discharged in the opposite direction from the printing unit. The mail items are fed via a diverter section to the conveying section, after franking, are conveyed via the diverter section which is switched over to change the conveying direction into a depositing apparatus below the diverter section. The mail items are guided in the opening region of the franking machine into the printing position and are returned out of the printing position. The printing position of a mail item fed to the printing unit is determined by a print head movement-controlled from a readiness position pursuant to the format length of the mail item.
