The conveyor system is for letters has an inlet belt (4) and an outlet belt (15). The belt rollers are oriented in a vertical position. The belts run parellel with a third belt (1) which produces a reaction face for clamping the letters. It extends from the start of the inlet conveyor to the end of the outlet belt. Between the two belts (14, 15) an inclined belt (18) is located. It is provided with a vacuum suction chamber (20) which pulls the letters against the belt through holes (18'). As the letters move along, the lower edge reaches the horizontal datum plate (19). The sheet feeding device has a side-pull apparatus (57) in order to lead the sheet aligned at the front-lay gauges (43) against the side-lay gauge (45) of the alignment table and a gearing with variable transmission ratio in order to drive the sheet-transport apparatus of the conveying table (17). The aim is, in the case of sheets of relatively stiff material, to enable the cycle frequency and therefore the operating speed of the connected printing machine to be very greatly increased without exceeding the maximum permissible impact velocity of the sheets on the front-lay gauges (43) and nevertheless to provide the possibility, in the case of sheets made of resilient material, of retaining the conventional side pull lay gauge. This is achieved in that the side-pull apparatus can be optionally switched off and a resulting sheet advance towards the side-lay gauge (45) is provided therefor. The drive of the sheet deliverer, of the alignment table and of the conveying table is synchronous with the drive of the printing machine, and the drive of the conveying table (17) can be slowed at least by a factor of two compared with the drive of the printing machine.

A pulsating shifter is provided behind the presented faces of the belts and coupled to the driving means for repetitively moving the faces from a reference position to a thrown position in which the belts are angularly bowed mutually inwardly toward the stream, dividing each face into an upstream portion and a downstream portion. The throw of the shifter means is such that the downstream portion in its thrown position is substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the stream.

A platen structure to facilitate the transport of stacked sheet material conveyed along a transport deck of a sheet feeing apparatus. The platen structure comprises first and second segments connected by means of a compliant coupling. The first segment of the platen is operative to engage a face of the stacked sheet material and apply a stabilizing normal force thereon. The second segment of the platen is operative to engage and travel synchronously with a moving surface of the transport deck. Furthermore, the first and second segments are connected by means of a compliant coupling which is operative to facilitate the relative angular displacement of the first and second segments about at least one axis while maintaining the relative linear displacement therebetween about at least one of the other axes. The platen structure ensures reliable sheet material run-out by compensating for a reduction in sheet material weight as the final or last sheets of the stack are singulated/separated. Furthermore, the compliant coupling enables the various segments of the platen structure to conform to the contour of the stacked sheet material, i.e., a cantilevered delivery profile.

A sheet stacking device includes a discharge port, an alignment wall, a discharge tray, an alignment belt, and a guide part. The guide part is configured to be provided between the alignment wall and the alignment belt. With the guide part, the inner circumferential surface of the alignment belt slides in contact.
