The periphery of the sagging glass comes to rest on a plurality of spaced apart support heads (6) arranged on curved side members (2a, 2b), said support heads being constructed of a heat transfer material (eg: a metal) and having a small surface area. To minimise marking of the bending glass where it contacts the support heads, the heads are preferably covered with ceramic paper. The oven features a curved roof (8), curved floor (9), and a number of infrared heating elements (10) which direct more heat towards the edges of the glass sheet than to the centre, producing a curved glass sheet with the desired properties.

The textured surface of the ceramic paper is replicated on the underside 10 of the glass tile providing a keying surface for paint and /or adhesive. The ceramic paper is coated with investrite 4 as release powder. The underside of the tiles are painted with epoxide paint 16 which may have fine sand 18 in it or added after painting the tile. Also various colours can be used on a tile and/or several layers of ceramic paper can be used.

The present invention relates to a ring-like member for use in a glass sheet bending and tempering process most adapted to a process wherein a glass sheet is released from engagement against a vacuum mold of a shape having sharply bent regions about longitudinally spaced, transversely extending lines of relatively sharp bending onto said ring-like member. The vacuum mold has a distance between the sharply bent regions at operating conditions that either equals or is slightly less than the distance desired in the bent glass. In a preferred embodiment, the ring-like member is split into two shaping rails, which are separable to adjusted positions wherein the sharply bent regions are spaced to conform to the distance desired therebetween in the bent glass sheet.

Holes (10), selectively connected to a negative pressure source, are placed in portions of the full-face mold (6) that are determined by the configuration of the annular mold when the annular mold comes into contact with a heated glass sheet (2) during the press bending process. The sheet (2) is drawn by negative pressure through the holes (10) towards the full-face mold (6) and thus acquires its shape. Positive pressure may be selectively applied to the holes (10) to release the sheet (2). According to the invention, at least some of the holes (10) are arranged in at least one groove (11) formed in the mold face of the full-face mold. The grooves (11) according to the invention accelerate considerably the removal by negative pressure of the air between the molding face of the full-face mold (6) and the glass sheet (2) to be bent and thus improve the press bending process.

Device comprises an upper retaining die provided with a pneumatic retaining mechanism, in particular a suction means, capable of holding glass sheet opposite to itself. Upper retaining die and/or bending plate are configured to move laterally relative to each other, so that bending plate is made with possibility of alternate location under upper holding die or under upper bending die. Bending plate is made with possibility of back-and-forth movement between position under upper retaining die, to receive sheet on its workpiece, and position under upper bending die to press sheet to upper bending die by means of its clamping mold. Billet mold comprises retainer comprising suction system acting on glass bottom side through holes in its contact path. Suction is sufficiently strong to prevent movement of the glass in the lateral direction on the workpiece during acceleration or deceleration. Convex die opening is communicated with negative pressure source to pull glass to convex die shaped surface. Communication with said source is kept for 0.8 to 5.0 s. Both dies are withdrawn. Separation of bent glass sheet is delayed for 0.1-1.0 s. Convex die opening is communicated with excess pressure source. Bent sheet glass is placed into concave die and, further, on conveyor. Convex die shaper surface temperature is kept equal to 180-400 °C when in contact with glass sheet. Press bending station for the bending of glass sheets

A press bending station includes an annular mold (5) and a full-face mold (6). Holes (10), selectively connected to a negative pressure source, are placed in portions of the full-face mold (6) that are determined by the configuration of the annular mold when the annular mold comes into contact with a heated glass sheet (2) during the press bending process. The sheet (2) is drawn by negative pressure through the holes (10) towards the full-face mold (6) and thus acquires its shape. Positive pressure may be selectively applied to the holes (10) to release the sheet (2). According to the invention, at least some of the holes (10) are arranged in at least one groove (11) formed in the mold face of the full-face mold. The grooves (11) according to the invention accelerate considerably the removal by negative pressure of the air between the molding face of the full-face mold (6) and the glass sheet (2) to be bent and thus improve the press bending process.

ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a ring-like member for use in a glass sheet bending and tempering process most adapted to a process wherein a glass sheet is released from engagement against a vacuum mold of a shape having sharply bent regions about longitudinally spaced, transversely extending lines of relatively sharp bending onto said ring-like member. The vacuum mold has a distance between the sharply bent regions at operat-ing conditions that either equals or is slightly less than the distance desired in the bent glass. In a preferred embodiment, the ring-like member is split into two shaping rails, which are separable to adjusted positions wherein the sharply bent regions are spaced to conform to the distance desired therebetween in the bent glass sheet.

An apparatus for bending a glass sheet has at least a lower mold, a conveyor device for conveying the heated glass sheet to a prescribed position over the lower mold, and a plurality of rolls for supporting the glass sheet in the prescribed position. A method of bending a glass sheet is carried out by utilizing the apparatus. The apparatus also includes a device for lowering the rolls to a position below the shaping surface of the lower mold, and an arrangement in the lower mold for accommodating the rolls which have been lowered. The apparatus may additionally have an upper mold coacting with the lower mold. The method comprises the steps of lowering the rolls below the shaping surface of the lower mold, transferring the glass sheet from the rolls onto the shaping surface of the lower mold while the rolls are lowered, and bending the glass sheet into conformity with the shaping surface of the lower mold under gravitational forces. The method may also include the step of lowering the upper mold simultaneously with the downward movement of the rolls, and press bending the glass sheet between the upper and lower molds.

Abstract of the Disclosure In the present invention a single shaping mold conforming to the outline and contour of the bent glass sheet is employed, onto which a heat-softened glass sheet is dropped to impart the bending force to the glass. Immediately after each glass sheet leaves a heating furnace, it is elevated by means of a flat vacuum platen which is brought into contact with the upper side of the glass sheet. When the vacuum platen and the glass sheet are raised to an elevated position, the shaping mold is conveyed into a position beneath the glass sheet, the vacuum is released, and the glass sheet drops onto the shaping mold to effect the bending. The shaping mold is then retracted from beneath the vacuum platen ant passed into a tempering station where blasts of air are directed onto the opposite surfaces of the glass sheet to temper the glass. This arrange-ment greatly simplifies change-over from one shape to another since the single bending mold is the only major element which muse be reconstructed. Another important feature of the present invention is that the arrangement may be readily adapted to bending and tempering a plurality of glass sheets simultaneously, thereby greatly increasing the productivity of the instal-lation..
