Disclosed is a molded article formed from a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) The modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) can be produced by modifying an unmodified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with an epoxy compound (B) having a double bond, wherein the amount to be modified with the epoxy compound (B) is 0.1 to 10 mol% per monomer unit of the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A). In the molded article, at least a part of the modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) is crosslinked and the gel fraction is 3% by weight or more. The molded article contains little harmful crosslinking agent and is excellent in hot water resistance, heat resistance and gas-barrier properties.

Preferably, the clay is intercalated or exfoliated during dispersion and has an aspect ratio of 20-10000. A process for preparing a gas barrier material is also disclosed by mixing the two packs. The resulting mixture is coated onto a first polymer film and an adhesive is applied to the coated film and/or a second polymer film. The first and second films are then adhered together, the bond strength between the films being at least 1.0N/15mm. The gas barrier material is useful for packaging foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals.

A method of producing water-containing EVOH pellets comprises: a first step of introducing a water-containing EVOH with a water content W1 from 10 to 90 mass% and at a temperature from 80°C to 130°C into an extruder for melt kneading; and a second step of cutting the water-containing EVOH extruded from the extruder for obtaining water-containing EVOH pellets, wherein the extruder has a back slit and water is discharged from the back slit, the water-containing EVOH is extruded from the extruder at a temperature from 80°C to 120°C, the water-containing EVOH extruded from the extruder has a water content W2 from 5 to 50 mass%, and a ratio (W2/W1) of the water content W2 to the water content W1 is 0.2 or more and less than 1. The production method allows efficient reduction of water in the water-containing EVOH while inhibiting elution of the EVOH and thus allows efficient production of water-containing EVOH pellets, and also provides high drying efficiency and thus allows inhibiting degradation due to heat of dried EVOH pellets to be obtained.

Polymeric shells and particles for vacuum insulation panels

A method of forming a polymeric vacuum insulation board is provided, the polymeric vacuum insulation board including a plurality of evacuated, closed-cell pores therein. In one embodiment, the method includes intermixing a polymer with zeolite particles that contain water and extruding the resulting composition under high pressure. During extrusion, water in the zeolite particles evaporates and creates a porous, closed-cell microstructure within a polymer matrix. As the polymer matrix cools and solidifies, water vapor is reabsorbed by the zeolite, which at least partially evacuates the closed-cell pores. In another embodiment, the method includes intermixing a polymer with expandable graphite particles and extruding the resulting composition under high pressure. During extrusion, the expandable graphite particles define evacuated voids. The polymer binder can be selected to include low gas permeance, for example ethylene vinyl alcohol (EvOH) or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC). In some applications, the polymer can be blended with nano-clays or other additives to further decrease the gas permeance of the vacuum insulation board.
