The invention relates to the use of mica coated with at least one metal oxide as flame retardant, and also thermoplastic molding compositions provided therewith. 1. A method of using mica coated with at least one metal oxide as a flame retardant , wherein the metal in the at least one metal oxide is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Zn , V , Cu , Mn , Fe , Co , Nb , Mo , W , and Sn.2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein an amount of the at least one metal oxide claim 1 , based on the coated mica claim 1 , is from 5 to 80% by weight.3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one metal oxide is ZnO and/or VOand not more than 20% by weight claim 1 , based on the coated mica claim 1 , of further metal oxides or nonmetallic compounds are present as a coating.4. A thermoplastic molding composition comprisinga) from 5 to 99.9% by weight of at least one thermoplastic polymer as component A, wherein component A is at least one polyamide and/or polyester,b) from 0.05 to 10% by weight of at least one mica coated with a metal oxide as component B,c) from 0.05 to 50% by weight of at least one flame retardant different from component B as component C,d) from 0 to 35% by weight of at least one functional polymer different from component A as component D,e) from 0 to 60% by weight of glass fibers as component E,f) from 0 to 10% by weight of further auxiliaries as component F,where the total amount of the components A to E is 100% by weight.5. The thermoplastic molding composition according to claim 5 , wherein in component B a metal in the metal oxide is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Zn claim 5 , V claim 5 , Ca claim 5 , Mu claim 5 , Fe claim 5 , Co claim 5 , Nb claim 5 , Mo claim 5 , W claim 5 , and Sn.6.
