Process for working up molten cellulose derivatives into threads and other shaped articles

Номер: GB0000688313A
Автор:
Принадлежит:

A cellulose derivative having a content of water between that which it would normally have after being exposed to the open air and that of the saturation point observed on melting is brought into the molten state and worked up into threads or other shaped structures. On exposure to the open air, cellulose triacetate takes up 0.1-0.3 per cent of water; a partially hydrolysed cellulose acetate may take up about 1.5 per cent. The saturation point observed on melting is that content of water above which evaporation of the water with foaming occurs when the cellulose derivative is melted. The presence of water in the cellulose derivative considerably reduces the melting-point and thus the temperature of the working-up process. The upper limit of the moisture content is usually not more than 10 per cent. For cellulose triacetate it is about 6 per cent and for a hydrolysed cellulose acetate it may be 8-9 per cent. The cellulose derivative may be dried to the desired moisture content during the ...

Improvements in the manufacture of films, sheets and the like containing cellulose derivatives

When coagulating cellulose ester and ether films, sheets, foils &c., transparent, smooth and easily detachable products are obtained by employing a coagulation bath with which a solvent or latent solvent of the film-forming solution has only a limited miscibility, and removing the film from the bath whilst it still contains a substantial proportion of such solvent or latent solvent. The liquid used for the preparation of the film forming solution may be a solvent, or a mixture of solvents, or a solvent mixture, although true solvents are preferred. If acetone or other water-miscible solvents are employed, the coagulation bath conveniently comprises a hydrocarbon; if a halogenated hydrocarbon or other hydrophobe solvent is used, an aqueous coagulation bath may be employed. The miscibility of the solvent with the coagulation bath may be still further reduced by dissolving in the latter salts, sugars &c., according to Specification 343,062, or by adding to the bath a proportion of the solvent ...

FUNCTIONALIZED CELLULOSE NANOCRYSTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS OF PREPARATION

Номер: US20190092926A1
Принадлежит: PURDUE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The surface hydrophobization of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by carboxylic acids, biodiesel, or plant oils was conducted via there herein disclosed green process using an one-pot synthetic method. In the process, an aqueous lactic acid syrup served as a solvent to provide a stable and well-dispersed water suspension of CNCs and participated in esterification reactions to produce an intermediate product of polylactic acid (PLA) oligomer grafted CNCs (CNC-g-PLA). This solvent and intermediate product system allows for an in situ solvent exchange from water to lactic acid without prior drying of the CNCs and a subsequent efficient esterification reaction of CNCs with carboxylic acids or esters having a long hydrocarbon chain (FAs). Another advantage of the disclosed process is the ability to reuse the reagents in the subsequent reaction in order to reduce the production cost. Grafting of renewable materials on the surface of CNCs was developed by polyesterification that is capable of being environmentally friendly and mass-produced without any organic solvents or toxic reagents. 2.
