Steel surfaces and ballast tanks, cargo holds, cofferdams, bridge undersides, the interior of offshore legs, ship hulls, ship cabin walls, ship decks, aircraft landing areas on ships or offshore constructions, drinking water tanks, underseals for containers, etc., are painted or coated by applying a composite material, which on curing, forms a material comprising a matrix comprising; A) homogeneously arranged inorganic solid particles of a size of from about 50 66 to about 0.5 //c, or a coherent structure formed from such homogeneously arranged particles; and B) densely packed solid particles having a size of the order of 0.5 - 100 //c and being at least one order of magnitude larger than the respective particles stated under A), or a coherent structure formed from such densely packed particles, the particles (A) or the coherent structure formed therefrom being homogeneously distributed in the void volume between the particles (B), the dense packing being substantially a packing corresponding to the one obtainable by gentle mechanical influence on a system of geometrically equally shaped large particles in which locking surface forces do not have any significant effect; and allowing the paint or surface coating composition to cure to form the above-defined matrix. Particles (B) are preferably Portland cement, particles (A) are preferably silica dust generated by growth from a vapour phase such as silica dust produced as a by product in the production of ferrosilicium or silicium metal in electrical furnaces. Homogeneous distribution of particles (A) is obtained by means of a surface active dispersing agent such as a concrete superplasticizer. Paint for use in the above method and generally for painting or coating any marine, offshore or landstructure to be coated and/or protected comprises above constituents and an organic binder such as a water-based emulsion, and optionally a defoamer and/or a thixotropic agent.

A process is disclosed for covering a substrate with a cementitious simulated ceramic surface having a mottled, speckled appearance. Cement and sand are mixed with an aqueous solution of an adhesive resin to create a viscous liquid mortar. The viscous liquid mortar is applied onto randomly spaced portions of the cementitious substrate to create a noncontiguous thickened cementitious coating having a high viscosity to prevent spreading of the liquid mortar over the cementitious substrate. The noncontiguous thickened cementitious coating is troweled to form a plurality of interconnecting and non-interconnecting flattened and level plateaus partially covering the cementitious substrate to reveal a simulated mottled, speckled ceramic covering.

A preparation method of steel pipe coating material containing magnetite is provided to obtain the coating material with high specific gravity sufficient to prevent buoyancy of a steel pipe and to ensure improvement of durability of the steel pipe and the coating material by adding magnetite(Fe3O4) with weight similar to that of hematite(Fe2O3) to the coating material. The method comprises: first step of crushing gathered sand into granules having particle size of 10mm or less; second step of crushing magnetite(Fe3O4) (including trace elements such as silver, copper, lead and zinc) ore into granules having particle size of 25mm or less; and third step of admixing 280-618kg/m^3 of cement, 0-1750kg/m^3 of the prepared sand granules from the first step, 100-2215kg/m^3 of the prepared Fe3O4 granules (including trace elements such as silver, copper, lead and zinc) from the second step, 113-275kg/m^3 of water and 4.7-9.13kg of admixture additive to form the resultant coating material.

According to the present invention, pinholes can be prevented from occurring without use of a separate base conditioning agent, and waterproof coating having excellent smoothness can be provided. In addition, since non-solvent polyurea is used for construction, an endocrine-disruptor is not produced and rapid curing makes construction ready and easy.
