This invention relates to block polymers containing both crystalline and elastomeric blocks, the block copolymer having an A block and a B block. The A block is a polyethylene or an ethylene polymer optionally containing an alpha-olefin and is generally crystalline. The B block contains an ethylene, α-olefin copolymer segment and optionally contain an ethylene, α-olefin, non-conjugated diene terpolymer segment. If the B block contains a diene containing segment, the diene containing segment is furthest from the junction of the A and the B blocks. Also disclosed is a process for manufacture of the block copolymers and methods for coupling the block copolymers. Coupled block copolymers are useful as thermoplastic elastomers exhibiting physical properties approaching those of crosslinked EP or EPDM elastomers, but showing thermal processability after coupling. The block copolymers of the present invention may also be used as a lubricant or fuel additive, as a plastics blend component, in bitumen blends, as a component in hot melt adhesives and as a component of roof sheeting compounds.

The reactants may be reacted in any order, such as the above order, or the amine reactant may be precomplexed. This invention relates to block polymers containing both cristalline and elastomeric blocks, the block copolymer having an A block and a B block. The block copolymers of the present invention may also be used as a lubricant or fuel additive, as a plastics blend component, in bitumen blends, as a component in hot melt adhesives and as a component of roof sheeting compounds.

Phospho-sulphurized metal salts of alkyl phenol sulphides are prepared by heating a sulphide of phosphorus in a mol. ratio of less than 0.25 : 1.0 at 100-200 DEG C. with a metal alkyl phenol sulphide containing less than 0.3 per cent by weight of water. The reaction may be conducted in a solvent such as a mineral oil or a hydrocarbon, such as xylol. The phosphorus sulphides specified are the pentasulphide (P2S5), the trisulphide (P4S3) or the heptasulphide (P4S7). The metal alkyl phenol sulphide may have the general formula <FORM:0755170/IV(a)/1> where R is one or more alkyl groups each containing from 5 to 25 carbon atoms such as t.-octyl- and t.-amyl-, M is a metal and x is an integer between 1 and 4. Metal alkyl phenol sulphides specified are those of alkaline-earth metals such as barium, calcium or strontium or of mixtures thereof such as calcium tert.-octyl phenol sulphide, barium-2:4-di-tert.-amyl phenol sulphide, strontium tert.-amyl phenol sulphide and the mixed calcium-barium tert.-octyl phenol sulphide. After the reaction with phosphorus sulphide, the reaction mixture is filtered and nitrogen is blown through at 100-120 DEG C. to remove unwanted products and to yield a solution of the product which may be added as an antioxidant and detergent to mineral oils and motor fuels (see Group III), to natural or synthetic rubber, asphalts, road oils and waxes (see Group V), and in organic materials generally. Examples illustrate the effect on the characteristics of the product of the use of various mol. ratios of phosphorus sulphide and metal alkyl phenol sulphide and of various degrees of dryness of the metal alkyl phenol sulphide. A phosphorous- and sulfur-containing additive and its use to impart anti-wear and/or antioxidant properties to oleaginous compositions such as fuels and lubricating oils, particularly power transmission compositions, such as automatic transmission fluids, is disclosed. The additive comprises a mixture of products formed by simultaneously reacting (1) a beta-hydroxy thioether, such as thiobisethanol, and (2) a phosphorous-containing reactant, such as tributyl phosphite. The reaction is carried out under reduced pressure conditions (e.g., -40 KPa to -100 KPa) to limit the amount of thioether species in said additive to less than about 45 mole %.

A succinimide composition is prepared by reacting a mixture of an alkenyl or alkylsuccinic acid derivative, an unsaturated acidic reagent copolymer, and a polyamine under reactive conditions. The alkenyl or alkyl substituent of the alkenyl or alkylsuccinic acid derivative has a Mn of from 1000 to 5000. The unsaturated acidic reagent copolymer is a copolymer of an unsaturated acidic reagent and an alkylene group. That alkylene group can be an α-olefin having 8 to 42 carbon atoms, a polyalkylene having from 8 to 28 carbon atoms, ethylene, styrene, 1,3-butadiene, vinyl alkyl ether having at least 3 carbon atoms, or vinyl alkanoate having at least 4 carbon atoms. The polyamine has at least three nitrogen atoms and 4 to 20 carbon atoms. The mixture contains from 0.5 to 10 equivalents of the alkenyl or alkylsuccinic acid derivative per equivalent of unsaturated acidic reagent copolymer and from 0.4 to 1.0 moles of polyamine per equivalent of alkenyl or alkylsuccinic acid derivative plus unsaturated acidic reagent copolymer.

A colloidal dispersion of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt is made by treating a mixture containing an alkali metal base or an alkaline earth metal base and oil solution of nonyl phenol and a thiophosphonic acid (in an amount of 10-25% of the total thiophosphonic to be added) derived from the reaction of a polyolefin of molecular weight above 300 with 5-20 wt. per cent of P 2 S 5 , with an acidic gas, then making at least one further addition of base, each addition of base being separate from and preceding an addition of acidic gas, and finally adding the balance of the thiophosphonic acid after the neutralization of substantially all of the base. Suitable bases are monohydrated barium hydroxide or a hydroxide of Li, Na, K, or Ca. Suitable acid gases carbon dioxide or ACl, NO 2 , SO 2 or N 2 O 3 . The preparation is carried out at 100-150‹ C. with each addition of base being followed by purging with N 2 to remove the water formed. The dispersion can be used in amounts of 0À5-5 wt. per cent as a combustion improver for fuel oils and in amounts of 1-7 wt. per cent as an inhibitor detergent in lubricants together with a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate.

The dispersants are formed by reacting (a) at least one dispersant having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, with (b) at least one polyolefinic compound substituted at each terminal position by a succinic group. Suitable substances for use as reactant (b) include compounds derived from at least one telechelic compound having up to 5000 carbon atoms and at least two terminal methylene groups by reaction with maleic anhydride or the like. The products are deemed to be effective dispersant/detergents for use in fuels and lubricants. In fuels the products are deemed to exhibit the property of inhibiting and/or reducing deposit formation such as intake valve deposits. In crankcase lubricants, the products are deemed to provide desirable viscosity index improving properties.

Multiple metal complexes of nitrogen compounds are prepared by reacting in any desired order (1) an organic reactant, preferably an alkenylsuccinic acid or anhydride or a polyalkylphenol-aldehyde reaction mixture, or a halogenated polyolefin; (2) a polyamine, having one nitrogen atom reactive with the organic reactant and at least one additional nitrogen atom such as an ethylene polyamine and the imidazoline or imidazolidine derivative thereof; (3) and at least two metal compounds, one of which is a metal of Groups IB, IIB, IVA, IVB, VIB, VIIB or VIII of the Periodic Table, capable of both forming a coordinated complex of the Werner type with the polyamine and also forming a complex with the second metal compound, and the said metal compound of metals of the above groups plus alkali and alkaline earth metals. The reactants may be reacted in any order, such as the above order, or the amine reactant may be precomplexed. Lubricant, grease, fuel and aqueous compositions are provided detergency and anti-wear properties by the presence of these multiple complexes.
