Talc or like solid unctuous substance is applied to ribbons of foil made of or containing cellulose derivatives, and the ribbons are then wrapped on electric conductors such as wires, cables, ribbons, bus-bars, and coils. The solid lubricant does not impart tackiness as is the case with oils, and it enables narrow ribbons of foil to be passed at high speed through the guides of the winding devices, and to be unwound from packages without sticking. Instead of talc, there may be used a metallic salt of a fatty acid such as zinc stearate or palmitate, or aluminium oleate, or bismuth oxychloride, or fuller's earth. The solid lubricant may be applied by rubbing, dusting, or blowing on to the surface of the foil. The quantity deposited is preferably so small that the transparency is not materially affected and subsequent cementing or welding is not interfered with. A process for the treatment of cutting tools, such as drills, reamers, milling cutters and lathe tools, comprises bonding either molybdenum di-sulphide or boron nitride with an ester to form a paste, coating the tool with the paste and heating the tool to volatilize the ester and leave an adherent film of molybdenum di-sulphide or boron nitride on the surface of the tool. Amyl acetate or a like substance or cellulose thinners may be used as the ester and, with these, the tool is heated to 300-350 DEG C. The Specification states that the film appears to act as a solid lubricant. A composite cam 84, comprising least two layers, and a cam shaft 70 have an outer porous layer impregnated with a solid lubricant 50 having an affinity to oil to reduce operating friction. The solid lubricant may be graphite and molybdenum disulphide in a matrix of metal or polymer composition. Cam 84, formed by powder metallurgy, has an inner layer 90 of eg soft/low carbon steel and the outer layer has hardened base circle and lobe portions 86, 88 of porous medium/high carbon Ni-Cr alloy steel. Alternatively the outer layer may be made porous by the addition of an arc plasma spray coating of a hard material, eg tungsten carbide. An anodised surface of aluminium or magnesium alloy provides the outer porous layer for the cam shaft 70 and bearing members 80 which are provided with a plurality of grooves 82. Cam 84 is assembled on the shaft 70 by expanding, eg hydraulically, the shaft's outer diameter. Also disclosed is the surface treatment of a valve guide and tappet.

The workpiece is then inserted in a heated split die, and the die loaded to alter the shape of the workpiece. The ratio of the solid lubricant to the glassy component is at least one to one. The particle size of the glassy component is important to the surface character of the finally shaped workpiece.

A friction material member particularly useful in high load and temperature applications and a method for making the same are disclosed. The friction material member is made by preparing a mixture of sinterable metal particles, carbonaceous material, friction enhancers and curable polymeric resin; the mixture comprising at least about 50 percent by weight of metal particles and sufficient resin to coat and bond the metal particles, carbonaceous material and friction enhancers. The mixture is molded and the resin cured to form a piece in a solid preformed shape corresponding to the shape of the mold. Thereafter, the preformed piece is heated in a substantially oxygen free atmosphere for a time and at temperatures and pressures sufficient to fuse at least a portion of the metal particles into a sintered metal matrix. The preformed piece may be sintered to a metal backing plate during the heating step, or may be welded, brazed or soldered to the plate after heating. The resulting product may be classified as a hybrid friction material, i.e., being a cross between semi-metallic and sintered full metallic friction materials.

The ferromagnetic particles can be of a magnetically soft or hard material (e.g. carbon steel, Ni or Co/Ni alloys) with a ratio of max. to min dimension of 6-20:1. The particles are pref. protected by a polymer coating. In the case of dispersing thickeners (e.g. metal soaps), these can be formed in situ by reaction of appropriate starting materials. High quality products can be produced in treatment times of a few seconds. Energy consumption is low. The process can be operated continuously and is readily automated.

Abstract of the Disclosure There is provided an improved process for isothermal shaping of a titanium-containing workpiece in a hot die. A precoat lubricant composition including a glassy component and a solid lubricant such as graphite dispersed in an organic medium is applied to the workpiece, and the workpiece heated to a temperature sufficient to remove the organic medium to leave a residue of glassy material and graphite on the workpiece. The workpiece is then inserted in a heated split die, and the die loaded to alter the shape of the workpiece. The ratio of the solid lubricant to the glassy component is at least one to one. The particle size of the glassy component is important to the surface character of the finally shaped workpiece.

A composition used for treating fibrous materials, e.g. viscose rayon fibres, to be used to reinforce rubber products comprises an aqueous or organic solvent solution or dispersion of a drying oil or a semi-drying oil and a metal soap having the formula [CH3(CH2)nCO2]2Me in which Me represents a divalent metal and n is an integer of 8-18, the solution or dispersion having a total concentration of oil, and soap of not more than 10% by weight. The oil may be soy bean oil or cotton seed oil and the soap may be cadmium or zinc stearate. The organic solvent may be a mixture of CCl4 and methyl alcohol. The composition may be used to replace part or all of the oil normally used in oiling the fibrous materials as they are spun, e.g. aqueous compositions comprising a sulphonated petroleum hydrocarbon, modified castor oil derivatives-polyethylene glycol, sodium sorbitan borate and sorbitan monopalmitate.ALSO:Fibrous materials, e.g. viscose rayon fibres, which are to be used to reinforce rubber products, e.g. tires, hoses and conveyer belts, are treated with an aqueous or organic solvent solution or dispersion of a drying oil or a semi-drying oil and a metal soap having the formula [CH3(CH2)nCO2]2Me in which Me represents a divalent metal and n is an integer of 8-18, the solution or dispersion having a total concentration of oil and soap of that, more than 10% by weight, and then dried at 50 DEG -160 DEG C. to free them of water or organic solvent so that their water or organic solvent content is reduced to 15% or less, the dried materials having affixed thereto solids in an amount of not more than 5% by weight. The treated materials have improved tensile strength, heat resistance and fatigue resistance, and their adhesive properties of rubber are improved.
