The oxidation stability of viscous synthetic hydrocarbon oils for use, e.g. as lubricants or insulating oils, is increased by adding thereto extracts obtained from natural hydrocarbon oils boiling above about 300 DEG C., or fractions thereof, by the use of selective solvents, which extracts have been refined by selective hydrogenation. The synthetic hydrocarbons are products obtained from unsaturated or aromatic hydrocarbons by polymerization or condensation, e.g. by the polymerization of vapour phase cracked products of paraffin wax or paraffinous materials, or by the condensation of olefines or chloroparaffins with aromatic hydrocarbons. The polymerization or condensation may be effected either chemically in the presence of aluminium chloride, boron p fluoride or a similar agent, or by voltolization. An extreme-pressure lubricating composition contains a lubricating oil and (1) a chlorinated hydrocarbon and (2) a minor proportion of a sulphur-containing fraction from the pyrolysis or distillation of bituminous shale, preferably a fraction containing from 13 to 25 per cent of sulphur mainly present as high molecular weight alkyl thiophenes and boiling above 200 DEG C, preferably between 250 DEG C ano 300 DEG C. Alternatively, a fraction as at (2) above may be chlorinated or condensed with a polychlorinated hydrocarbon, and the product used instead of or with addition (1). Fraction (2) above or its chlorination product may also be treated with a sulphide of phosphorus before addition to the lubricating oil, or the fraction may be phosphorized and then chlorinated. A spinning oil comprises an aqueous emulsion of an oleine or mineral oil and the phosphate of an aliphatic amine having more than six carbon atoms which has been reacted with ethylene oxide, the said phosphate containing not more than two amino groups per phosphorus atom. The oleines are liquid, water-insoluble, high-molecular fatty acid by-products obtained in the manufacture of stearic acid. If desired mixtures of amines derived from natural fatty acid mixtures, e.g. the coconut fatty acids, may be used. In an example 5 to 10 (preferably 6.5) parts by weight of stearylamine are reacted with 5 to 15 molar proportions of ethylene oxide and the product is converted into the monoamine phosphate by reaction with phosphoric acid. The product is mixed with 90-95 (preferably 93.5) parts of oleine and 100 parts of water to form a stable emulsion. Specification 710,860 is referred to.

The alkylate from (1) may be washed with NaOH and distilled to remove excess aromatic starting material. The final alkylate may be washed with NaOH and distilled to recover the di-alkylated product as residue.

A grease composition comprises a synthetic oil which is a distillation residue of the Oxo process, or is obtained from this residue by esterification with a saturated dicarboxylic acid preferably containing 4-12 carbon atoms, thickened to a grease consistency with a lithium or aluminium soap of a saturated fatty acid having more than 12 carbon atoms. The distillation residues boiling above 210 DEG C. or 250 DEG C. are preferably used. Olefins obtained by polymerizing mixtures of propylenes and butylenes, or olefins obtained from the Fischer-Tropsch process, may be used in the Oxo process. Dicarboxylic acids referred to are adipic and sebacic acids. Lithium soaps of hydrogenated fish oil acids, stearic and hydroxy stearic acids, and of acids derived from beef fat, lard oil and tallow are referred to, and aluminium stearate is also mentioned. Phenyl alpha naphthylamine may be added to the composition. Mineral oil may also be mixed with the synthetic oil composition.

Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.

The invention relates to a method of lubricating a mechanical device (such as an internal combustion engine) with a lubricating composition. The disclosed technology provides a method of lubricating a compression-ignition internal combustion engine with a maximum laden mass over 2,700 kg comprising supplying to the engine a lubricating composition comprising: an oil of lubricating viscosity, a 300 TBN or higher alkaline earth metal sulfonate detergent having a metal ratio of 10 to 40, an alkaline earth metal sulfonate detergent having a metal ratio of 3 to 9, and a TBN of 81 to 180 mg KOH/g, wherein the sulfonate detergents provide a total amount of sulfonate substrate of 1 wt % to 3 wt % of the lubricating composition, 0.1 to 1.2 wt % of antioxidant, wherein at least 20 wt % of the antioxidant is a phenolic antioxidant, a borated compound present in an amount to deliver 25 ppm to 300 ppm of boron, the lubricating composition has a sulfated ash content of 0.5 wt % to not more than 1.5 wt %, and the lubricating composition has a TBN of 6.5 to 15 mg KOH/g. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lubricating composition is characterized as having (i) a sulfur content of 0.5 wt % or less claim 1 , and (ii) a phosphorus content of 0.15 wt % or less.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oil of lubricating viscosity comprises a base oil selected from one or more of an API Group I claim 1 , II claim 1 , III claim 1 , IV claim 1 , V claim 1 , or mixtures thereof.4. A method for improving wear control, while maintaining or improving deposit control and cleanliness, in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and specific combinations of low soap detergents, dispersants, and/or mixtures thereof, as a minor component. The low soap detergents include alkaline earth metal salicylates, alkaline earth metal sulfonates, or mixtures thereof, all having the same or different total base number (TBN). The total amount of soap delivered by the low soap detergent is less than 0.60 weight percent of the lubricating oil. The dispersants include borated and/or non-borated polyisobutylene succinimide (PIMA) having a basic nitrogen content of 1% or greater. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.
