Amine fluoborates of formula RxABF4, where R is an amine and x is 1 or more, are prepared by interaction of an amine with a fluoborate such as ammonium fluoborate. Amines mentioned are aniline, diethylene triamine, 3-di-n-amylaminepropylamine, monoethanolamine, phenylethanolamine, aminoethylethanolamine and nitron (1,4-diphenyl-3,5-endoanilino-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole).ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of hydrocarbon oil and a minor proportion of a fluoborate RxHBF4, where R is an amine and x may be 1 or more. The hydrocarbon oil may be of natural or synthetic origin. Fluoborates mentioned are those of diethylene triamine, nitron, aniline, aminoethylethanolamine, 3 - di - n - amylaminopropylamine, monoethanolamine and phenylethanolamine. From 0.5 to 5 per cent of the fluoborate is preferably used. Additives, such as extreme pressure additives composed of chlorine-, sulphur- or lead-containing compounds, may also be added.

Phosphorus- and sulphur-containing reaction products are prepared by reacting a phosphorus sulphide with a cyclic ketone having at least 12 carbon atoms. The ketone may be derived from the condensation of acetone to high molecular weight isophorone type fractions; the hydrogenated condensation products may also be used, and other ketones mentioned are dibutyl cyclohexanone, alkyl substituted carvomenthone, menthone, pulegone, carvone and camphor. Hydrogenation is stopped at 89À6% by releasing the pressure and deactivating the catalyst by adding aqueous HCl and methanol. Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.

Known higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays can be surprisingly used as thixotropic agents in reinforced thermoset resins containing a major proportion of an unsaturated polyester and a minor proportion of styrene type monomer by employing a novel pregel process. In this process, the quaternary ammonium clay is pregelled in the styrene and the resulting pregel is then mixed with the unsaturated polyester to produce the final gel which is usually combined with glass fiber as a reinforcing agent for the production of thermoplastics. The novel clay gel compositions of the present invention have surprisingly advantageous properties, compared to the presently used fumed silica gel compositions.

Polyolefin lubricant base oils can be surprisingly gelled by layer and chain type overtreated higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays preferably containing a minimum of 12% excess of the quaternary ion moiety over their ion exchange capacity. For example, an overtreated dihydrogenated ditallow ammonium montmorillonite containing a 22% excess of the quaternary ion can be used to prepare a polydecene based grease although it does not gel mineral oil lubricants. In contrast, the known clay analog of equivalent treatment gels the mineral oil but not the synthetic polyolefin lubricant under comparable conditions.
