A sulfurized alkaline earth metal (e.g., calcium) dodecylphenate is prepared by reacting (i) dodecylphenol with (ii) calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide in an amount of about 0.3 to about 0.7 moles per mole of dodecylphenol charged and (iii) an alkylene glycol in an amount of about 0.13 to about 0.6 moles per mole of dodecylphenol charged; and reacting the product of the first step with sulfur in an amount of about 1.6 to about 3 moles per mole of dodecylphenol charged; and thereafter optionally reacting the product with additional calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide and with carbon dioxide so as to form an overbased phenate. The product thus prepared has reduced levels of monomeric dodecylphenol.

A high TBN overbased metal sulfonate detergent is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbyl-substituted organic sulfonic acid or metal salt thereof with a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of a mono-alcohol and a carboxylic acid and reacting this mixture with carbon dioxide to form a carbonated overbased metal sulfonate. A high TBN overbased metal sulfonate detergent is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbyl-substituted organic sulfonic acid or metal salt thereof with a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of a mono-alcohol and a carboxylic acid and reacting this mixture with carbon dioxide to form a carbonated overbased metal sulfonate. The resulting overbased metal detergent has a metal equivalent to sulfonic acid substrate ratio of 5:1 to 27:1. The product thus prepared has improved viscometrics, filterability, and TBN:ash ratio. Lubricating compositions comprising said overbased detergent display reduced friction and wear performance. The invention further relates to methods of lubricating an internal combustion engine with a lubricant containing an overbased detergent prepared as described.

Disclosed is a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 wt % to 10 wt % of an oxyalkylated aromatic polyol compound represented by the formula: (see above formula) wherein R1 is -(CH2CHR5-O-)m R6, R2 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, -(C=O)R4, or -(CH2CHR5-O-)m R6, n is 1 or 2, R3 is a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 150 carbon atoms, -(C=O)OR4, or -(CH2CHR5-O-)m R6, x is 0 to 2, R4 is a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, R5 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 32 carbon atoms, or CH2OR8, R6 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, or -(C=O)R7, R7 is a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, R8 is a hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and m = 1 to 20. Also disclosed is a method of lubricating a mechanical device with the lubricating composition.
