A lubricating oil additive is prepared by reacting at an elevated temperature, e.g. 100-140 DEG C., an oil solution of an oil-soluble sulphonate, an acidic phosphorus-containing hydrocarbon, and an alkyl phenol, with CO2 in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in sufficient proportions to ensure a final product that is alkaline. The sulphonate is preferably a petroleum sulphonate, e.g. of molecular weight 350-600 and may be an alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphonate. The product may have an alkalinity index greater than 50. The phosphorus-containing hydrocarbon is preferably a phosphosulphurised hydrocarbon and may be derived from a wide range of saturated and unsaturated, cyclic and acyclic hydrocarbons including petroleum fractions; preferred are polyolefines, e.g. polyisobutylene of molecular weight 600-300. An extreme-pressure lubricating composition contains a lubricating oil and (1) a chlorinated hydrocarbon and (2) a minor proportion of a sulphur-containing fraction from the pyrolysis or distillation of bituminous shale, preferably a fraction containing from 13 to 25 per cent of sulphur mainly present as high molecular weight alkyl thiophenes and boiling above 200 DEG C, preferably between 250 DEG C ano 300 DEG C. Alternatively, a fraction as at (2) above may be chlorinated or condensed with a polychlorinated hydrocarbon, and the product used instead of or with addition (1). Fraction (2) above or its chlorination product may also be treated with a sulphide of phosphorus before addition to the lubricating oil, or the fraction may be phosphorized and then chlorinated. Phosphorus- and sulphur-containing reaction products are prepared by reacting a phosphorus sulphide with a cyclic ketone having at least 12 carbon atoms. The ketone may be derived from the condensation of acetone to high molecular weight isophorone type fractions; the hydrogenated condensation products may also be used, and other ketones mentioned are dibutyl cyclohexanone, alkyl substituted carvomenthone, menthone, pulegone, carvone and camphor. Esters are made by reacting a partial ester of pentaerythritol and a monocarboxylic acid with an inorganic acidic compound of phosphorus. The monocarboxylic acid is preferably an aliphatic acid of 6-30 carbon atoms, e.g. oleic, stearic, lauric, or their homologues or tall oil acids. The phosphorus compound may be POCl3, PCl5, P2O5, PSCl3, P2S5, P4S7 or P2O3. A monohydric alcohol, preferably of 1-30 carbon atoms may also be employed in the reaction. Where HCl is released in the reaction, a neutralizing agent such as pyridine may be present. The polyesters formed may be monomeric or polymeric and may contain unesterified hydroxyl groups. Where phosphorus sulphides are used, thiophosphoric or thiophosphorous acid esters are obtained. Temperature is generally 0-150 DEG C. and acid catalysts may be employed. The invention also relates to concentrates used in preparing lubricating compositions. The present combination of components provides good low and high temperature properties especially when used in combination with one or more mineral oils. A lubricating oil composition comprising:(a) an oil of lubricating viscosity;(b) 2% to 17% by weight of an ethylene/α-olefin copolymer; and(c) 0.04% to 0.15% by weight of an additive comprising an amine salt of a hydrocarbyl thiophosphoric acid ester.2. The lubricating oil composition of claim 1 , wherein the additive comprising an amine salt of a hydrocarbyl thiophosphoric acid ester is obtained by reacting a phosphorous sulfide with one or more alcohols having about 3 to about 13 carbon atoms to form a thiophosphoric acid ester claim 1 , further reacting the thiophosphoric acid ester with an alkylene oxide to form a hydroxyl-substituted ester of thiophosphoric acid claim 1 , and further reacting said hydroxyl-substituted ester of thiophosphoric acid with a phosphorous oxide to form a an acidic phosphoric acid intermediate claim 1 , and salting said acidic phosphoric acid intermediate with one or more amines wherein said amines contain one or more hydrocarbyl groups having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms.3. The invention comprises an additive for lubricating oils (see Group III), said additive being a compound obtained by the sulphurization or sulphurization and phosphorization of the unsaponifiable matter extracted from saponified wool grease, or a metal salt of such a sulphurized and phosphorized compound. The unsaponifiable matter may be sulphurized by heating with sulphur and the reaction may be assisted by adding a small amount of sulphur monochloride or sulphur dichloride. The sulphurized product may then be phosphorized by reacting it with a phosphorus compound, e.g. a phosphorus sulphide or halide and particularly phosphorus pentasulphide or sesquisulphide, e.g. by heating with either of the latter at 220 DEG to 250 DEG F. Alternatively, the unsaponifiable matter may be reacted with sulphur chlorides in oil or an inert solvent and the chlorine then replaced by sulphur, or phosphorus and sulphur, by reacting the product in a suitable solvent with sodium sulphide or polysulphide or the sodium salt of an organic dithiophosphoric acid. The sulphurization of the unsaponifiable material may be carried out in the presence of a vulcanization accelerator, e.g. mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazole disulphide, tetramethyl and tetraethyl thiuram disulphides or mixtures of these compounds with diphenyl guanidine. It is preferred to carry out the sulphurization in the presence of an aliphatic, alicyclic, or reduced heterocyclic secondary amine such as dicyclohexylamine, diethanolamine, or morpholine and the sulphurization is facilitated by carrying it out in the presence of mineral oil. The products may be freed from oil-insoluble impurities by dissolving in a suitable solvent such as petroleum ether, filtering, and then removing the solvent by distillation. [Also in Division C5] An oil-soluble polymer contains units derived from an oxygen-containing monomer grafted on to an oxidized, degraded interpolymer of ethylene and propylene, said oxidized, degraded interpolymer having a molecular weight of 1000 to 200,000 and being formed by contacting an ethylene-propylene interpolymer having a molecular weight of 50,000 to 800,000 with oxygen at a temperature of at least 100‹ C. for a period of time sufficient to effect a substantial reduction in the molecular weight of said interpolymer. The interpolymer, which is preferably derived from ethylene, propylene and a minor amount of a mono-olefin or polyene e.g. a non- conjugated diene, is oxidized and degraded by bubbling oxygen or air through a heated solution of the interpolymer, or by blowing air over the surface of the solution while the solution is subjected to shearing agitation. Alternatively, the degradation and grafting are effected simultaneously. Preferred graft monomers are vinyl esters of saturated carboxylic acids, N-vinyl lactams and N-oxohydrocarbon or sulphohydrocarbon acrylamides. In examples, (a) a degraded ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene interpolymer is grafted with diethylaminoethyl methacrylate or decyl methacrylate; and (b) a degraded ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene interpolymer is grafted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, N-vinylpyrrolidone, methacrylic acid, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, an ester of methacrylic with an alcohol derived from a wax having a molecular weight of about 350, N - (1,1 - dimethyl - 3 - oxobutyl) acrylamide, a vinyl ester of a saturated carboxylic acid containing about 10 carbon atoms or 2 - acrylamido - 2 - methylpropane - 1 - sulphonic acid. The graft polymer obtained using methacrylic acid is reacted with N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine. The graft polymers are incorporated in mineral oil lubricants.

L'invention décrit l'obtention d'un produit, soluble dans les huiles, de la réaction de condensation d'un monomère sur un polymère de l'éthylène, et les applications de ce produit d'addition. On obtient le produit par une réaction de condensation, catalysée, d'un monomère polymérisable par voie anionique et qui contient de préférence de l'azote et une insaturation éthylénique, par exemple l'acrylonitrile, avec un copolymère oxydé de l'éthylène et d'au moins une alpha-mono-oléfine (3 à 50 atomes de carbone), par exemple le propylène. Sous sa forme préferée, ce produit contient 0,005 à 2 % en poids d'azote et sa masse moléculaire moyenne en nombre est de 100 000 à 500 000. Il peut servir d'agent multifonctionnel d'amélioration de l'indice de viscosité ou d'agent de dispersion pour une huile minérale lubrifiante.
